From: ALEX M P MILLER To: Multiple recipients of list H-SIG Subject: 1807 ZEMPLEN EXPULSION Date: Friday, June 12, 1998 11:39 AM Hello All With the partition of Poland in 1700's and the integration of Galicia into the Austro-Hungarian empire, it has been said "A great number of Jews immigrated into Hungary". Naively, I searched for a national immigration policy, to shed light on how and how many. I believe we often make the mistake of viewing historic events with today's glasses. Specifically, if there has been any kind of national policy, it has been surely ignored, and the facts show that each county functioned pretty independently, following their own laws. Each county was the fiefdom of a handful of nobles who in essence owned the county and implemented their own decisions. Take Zemplen-- Two cases: A. It is a fact that Zemplen allowed Jews, incl. my family, to own real estate and land, long before the rest of Hungary. B. Regarding immigration, there has been a lot of talk about Jews invading the country and multiplying to fast. Zemplen, however, went beyond talking and in 1807 expelled all Jews who moved there after 1790, including those who came from other counties and even other parts of Zemplen .
