Galicia Research Groups and Town Historians
Gesher Galicia Research Groups and Town Historians collect and share information relating to families that once lived in their focus towns or administrative districts (A.D.), which may include community, social, religious, economic, political, and environmental matters. The groups acquire data and raise funds for the indexing of archival and other records and for the
translation of records and Yizkor books. When costs are funded and databases are complete, these indices are searchable on the
JRI-Poland, Yizkor Book, or Databases web sites on JewishGen. Most groups have already created websites for their towns of interest.
New members are both welcomed and encouraged. To make a contribution, assist with a project, or for more information, contact the Coordinator
or Town Historian of your town or A.D. If you are interested in organizing a Research Group or serving as Town Historian, contact the Gesher Galicia research coordinator.
Note: A.D. is the AdministrativeDistrict where towns were located in 19th century Galicia.
Town names appear as they were under the Austrian administration. Many of the towns in Ukraine now use the Ukrainian spelling of their
name. If you aren't sure what administrative district your ancestral town was in, consult a resource such as Suzan Wynne's book, The Galitzianers: The Jews of Galicia, 1772-1918, or look at the PolishRoots Vital
Records for Galician Towns web page.
