Database of Eastern Galician Localities, 1919-1939

Including some Western Galician Districts

This database contains data for 3,839 Eastern Galician localities from the following interwar provinces of Poland:

• Tarnopol Province - 1,035 localities
• Stanislawow Province - 859 localities, and
• Lwow Province - 1,939 localities (including Rzeszow, Przemysl, Lancut and Kolbuszowa regions of Western Galicia).

The primary source for the data is the detailed information on all Poland's localities listed in the 1929 Poland Business Directory and the alphabetical list of localities issued as addenda to the Directory. Additional sources include various Ukrainian and Polish resources for Western Ukraine, such as maps, atlases, books, memoirs, and private correspondence with Ukrainian researchers from the geography and history departments of Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Ternopil universities.

Data for each locality in the database includes the following information:

• locality name,
• administrative status -- parish, shtetl (miasteczko),  or town,
• administrative district -- powiat, 
• province  -- wojewodstwo,and
• total number of residents (from 1921 census).

Data for some localities also includes original Polish name when different from the name listed in the 1929 Poland Business Directory.

Search for a locality. You may enter either the entire name or just a prefix (the first few letters of the name) if you aren't sure of the entire name. Use the "plaintext" search method only when you are sure of the exact spelling. The "dmsoundex" search method will look for names that sound like the name that you type.

Search Tip:

Search using the Polish name for the town whenever possible, not the Ukrainian or German name.  Even if you get the spelling wrong, the dmsoundex search  method will often help you to find names that sound the same.  For example, the now Ukrainian city of Lviv is called "Lwow" in Polish and "Lemberg" in  German.  If you search using "Lwow", you will find Lwow in the database.  If you search using "Lviv" as the name and use the dmsoundex search method, you will still find Lwow.  If, however, you enter "Lemberg" as the town name, you will not find the town in the database.  Similarly, "Stanislawow" is in the database.  If you enter "Stanislavov", you will  still find "Stanislawow", but if you enter "Ivano-Frankivsk" you will not find the town in the database.
