 | | | After an update on GG's newest map and landowner records project in Lviv, we'll waltz through the myriad resources in Vienna for Jewish genealogists researching their Galician relatives. We will cover the vast holdings of the IKG's
(Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien - Jewish Community of Vienna) vital records collection, the treasures found in the Gasometer archives (household registration records and city directories), and the Austrian National Library collections (school records). |
Mark Halpern will provide a short status report on JRI-Poland's activities with vital records from Galicia.
We will complete the meeting with member Bernard Reiner as he illustrates his 2008 “homecoming” trip with Alex Dunai, as he returns to the Bohorodchany, Galicia burial site where his ancestors were laid to rest more than four centuries ago, reads the megillah in the Great Stanislawow synagogue, attends shul in Kolomea on Purim morning, and eats from the “conflicted soil” of his ancestors.

After a lunch break -- informal groups can dine in the neighborhood -- return to the Center to attend the JGSNY meeting. The JGSNY 2:00 pm meeting is free to members of JGSNY and Gesher Galicia. Non-members are asked to pay a $5.00 fee.

Research at the International Tracing Service (ITS) Archives in Bad Arolsen, Germany:

In May 2008, 40 genealogists spent a week of researching at the ITS archives, the most important repository in the world containing information about individual victims of World War II. A short video will provide a first-hand look at the vast resources of the ITS and what the on-site research process looks like, followed by a panel discussion in which four trip participants – Valery Bazarov, Janet Isenberg, Renee Steinig and Pamela Weisberger will offer their unique perspectives on their experience. Pamela will also share information about the Galician-specific community records discovered there.

Also note that the The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at CJH will be open 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM for networking with other researchers and access to research materials and computers.
