Piaskie -Luterskie is situated 26km ESE of Lublin 51 08'/22 52'.
In the XV century Piaski was a village called Pogorzaty Staw. The village became a town with rights in 1470, and changed its name to 'Piaski' The land was ruled successively by Arians, Calvinists and Lutherans. In 1783 the calvinists built a new church whose ruins are standing till today, and are labeled 'Lutheran ' by mistake, adding the name 'Luterskie' to the town. In 1869 the Russian Governement took away the civic rights from the town because of Piaski's involvement in the insurrection of 1863.

Piaski was a thriwing community at the beginning of the 20th century with a population of 7000, including 5000 Jews. Piaski's geographical situation, on the 'King Road' to Lublin, proved primordial to its economical viability. The Jewish community in Piaski reflected other prominent communities in Poland, with the establishment along the years, of religious, social and educational institutions based on the highest standards. Likewise, the town was not spared antisemitic violence and hatred.

In 1941 the nazis interned all the Jews of Piaski in a ghetto, from which they were to be deported to Belzec, Sobibor, and Majdanek . A few survivors have passed down to future generations the horrifying stories surrounding the extermination of Piaski's jews. May the Almithy avenge their memory!
70% of the town was destroyed during the war, including the synagogue and the Jewish cemetery.

Today Piaski is reconstructed, and the civil parrish of Piaski is the biggest parrish in Lublin province with a population of 15,000. Piaski itself comprises 3500 people. No Jewish community was reconstituted in Piaski.

Smuel lejb WAJZER and Esther KARPMAN

Pulawy 1908-1918

Smuel Lejb Wajzer was born on December 2, 1908 in Pulawy, Poland.
He was the fourth child of Nachum Wajzer , whose profession was to choose and mark trees to be chopped down. Nachum was affiliated to the Radzin Chassids and sent his boys to the Cheder where Lejb received the only institutional education he ever had. Informal education included daily energetic swims in the Wista, fighting sports, German language acquisition with young Poles from Germanic territories. At age nine Lejb joined the work force and acquired new skills in shoe manufacture, at the side of his older brother Aaron-Dawid.

Warsaw 1918-1928

The family may have moved to Warsaw towards the end of WW1. Sender Yossef, the youngest child, was born in Warsaw in 1918. Lejb’s mother, Golda Friedheim, started running a coal store. In the capital, the family resources diminished, and in the late 20’s Lejb emigrated to Paris in the hope to improve his economic situation.

Paris 1928-1938

Lejb joined the large community of Jewish Polish immigrants in Paris and assumed the name Leon.
In 1933 Lejb decided to go back to Poland to find a suitable bride. His brother in law, Aaron Karpman married to Madeleine, suggested he meets with his youngest sister, the baby of the family, Esther. Lejb, an extremely handsome young man, met with the gracious Esther 19 years old. She refused at first to even consider marriage with 'such an old man'. After explaining the relativity of old age, and a few strolls in the street of Tarczyn, the deal was concluded and the marriage took place on the very day of Esther’s 19th birthday. It was the second wedding between the Wajzer family and Karpman family.
Lejb and Esther returned to Paris where Mali, their first child, was born in 1936.


Issoudun 1938-1942

Lucien, the second child, was born in Issoudun in 1938. Lejb’s sister, Madeleine, married with Esther’s Brother, Aaron, had moved as well from Paris. When WW2 broke out Lejb enlisted as a volunteer in the Polish Brigade of the French army. He was taken prisoner in September 1939 and was interned in Stalag VII A in Moosburg, not far from Munich. Later he was transferred to Stalag XVII B situated in Krems near Vienna, Austria. Many American POWs were interned in this Stalag. Lejb ,whose German was fluent (with no Yiddish accent) and who mastered French and Polish as well, was recruited as an interpreter. In the meantime, in Issoudun ,Aaron was arrested under tragic circumstances by the Gestapo. He was interned in the camp of Vernet, then in Drancy from which he was deported to Aushwicz on September 25, 1942. Aaron did not return.

Neuvy Saint-Sepulcre 1942-1945

After Aaron’s arrest, Esther fled with her children and her sister in law Madeleine and niece, Marguerite. They found refuge in a small village, where the good villagers kept a vigilant eye on them, and where the head of the local police was also ... the head of a resistance group. In Neuvy, Mali and Lucien went to school while Esther would sew as a means of subsistence. She would also take her bicycle to search for food to be sent to her POW husband. Extremely worried by the frequent arrests, Esther sent the children to a Catholic family in Haute-Vienne. A few weeks later, worried sick, she perilously made the journey by bus to take them back. She found the children in a disastrous situation, unkempt and frightened. The above events were related in Esther Wajzer’s book 'Ma nuit la plus longue' (My longest Night), ed.1979.

Chateauroux 1945-1981

In 1944 Lejb was repatriated as being wounded from Stalag XVII B to a military hospital in France. The mysterious circumstances of the injury were never clarified. In 1945 the reunited family moved to the closest town, Chateauroux. Esther had to take a lawyer in Paris in order to legally reopen the business, which was first registered in 1940 and forced to close in 1942. The French government was not eager to authorize foreign nationals to open businesses and compete with French nationals! On the other hand, as a POW Lejb could claim some rights.
Lejb and Esther reconstituted their life in a frenzy while waiting anxiously for news of the family they had left behind in Poland. They worked for many years night and day at the family business of leather clothing. In 1948 a daughter was born to bear a difficult legacy, the names of both grandmothers killed during the Shoah: Golda-Ita. In the ‘;50’s Lejb’s youngest brother, Sender Yossef, was located and he soon emigrated to France with his family. Esther was reunited with five nephews, four sons of Cyrla Karpman Zacharowicz and one son of Favish Karpman. The family business 'La Maison Wajzer' was flourishing. In 1956 came the 'baby' of the family, who was named after the only grandparent whose name had not been passed on, Nachum, which became in French the name Nathalie. The family knew that Nachum had died from Typhus in the ghetto of Warsaw.
The Wajzers had found a haven of peace away from painful memories: Preuilly sur Cher. They would spend vacations and week-ends in this small village on the river 'Cher'. The extended family would meet in Preuilly well into the 80s at the family house, which had been rented yearly since 1945.
In 1960 Esther received the amazing news that her older brother Srul Karpman was still alive. He had been deported to Siberia for fifteen years and had just reached the coasts of Israel. The dramatic reunion, in Chateauroux ,of the brother and sister made the front page of the local newspaper.
In the summer of 1972 Lejb embarked on a journey back to Austria, to re-visit the Stalag. In 1981 he died of cardiac arrest at the age of 73.

The End of the Journey 1981-1994

Esther, who had suffered a severe stroke in 1976, lived to the age of 80. After Lejb’s death she moved out to Fontenay Sous-Bois near Paris, to live with Mali and her family. Esther celebrated her last birthday, in July 1994, surrounded by her four children and all her Israeli grandchildren. On that day her happiness and pride were contagious.

The journey of Lejb and Esther which started in Poland and continued to France, ended in Israel where both are buried next to each other.
