My Janisch/Yanisch Closest Connection came from Semriach, Steiermark, Austria. They also lived in Bohemia.

It is the Bohemian in Me

Theresa Marie Janisch was born in Semriach, Steiermark, Austria in 1881. Her Father, John Janisch, changed the spelling of their name to Yanisch. He felt there were too many Janischs with a J. The name was never changed legally, but was used from the time he changed the spelling and was never changed back.

John Yanisch Marries Genovefa Gerlich in 1858

John Yanisch married Genovefa Gerlich in 1858. They lived in Absdorf, Bohemia. During their marriage they had 10 children Alois, Edward, Edward, Emil, Frank, Amelia, Johan, Mathilda, Marie, and Theresa Marie.

Alois, Emil and Edward died in Bohemia.

Gettin Ready to Emigrate

Genovefa Gerlich's parents were Frank Gerlich and Victoria Marie Schuman. John Yanisch's parents were John Janisch and Barbara Schmeiser. The Gerlichs and Janisch's helped Genovefa and John Gerlich buy Jagerhof a hunting lodge for royals. They were the first commoners to own it. There Genovefa learned to cook and take care of Jagerhof. The children learned to do chores.

In 1894 John Yanish died. We are assuming at Jagerhof.
Genovefa, Marie, Frank, Theresa and a niece arrived in New York 5 Dec 1894.

Genovefa next set up housekeeping in Oak Grove Wisconsin.

What Next?

We have had the most difficulty finding the ancestors from Austria, Bohemia and perhaps Germany. The surnames in our direct line of our family are Meitners, Nikls, Janisch, Yanisch, Schmeiser, and Schuman. They are from Lanskron, Bohemia.
We have a lot of information for the people who came to the USA. But not much from the ancestors that stayed in Bohemia. I would (as would my Mother) like to find out the most we can about our ancestors from Bohemia. Any information would be most welcomed. I would also help you in any way I could. Thank You.
