Samuels



The Samuels (originally something like Shmykis or Shmulkas) came from in or near Annopol, Ukraine. They immigrated to the U.S. in the early twentieth century, primarily to St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

First generation


1. Isaac Shmykis. Religion Jewish.

Born mid-1800's.

Second generation


2. David Shmykis. Died 1907 in Russia. Religion Jewish.

Born around 1870's. The family lived in Annopol, Poland (later Russia, later Ukraine). They were "Litvaks," not belonging to any of the Chassidik sects to the south of Galicia. Together they raised 17 children including 3 sets of twins. David died when William was thirteen (about 1907).



He married Ida Pichenick. Born in Russia. Religion Jewish.

(Ida was also referred to as Chava.) William sent her a ticket to come to the U.S., but she was getting old and felt that she couldn't make the trip.



They had the following children:

She first married ?. Religion Jewish.

She second married Garfinkle. Religion Jewish.



They had the following children:

4. Rebecca (Breindel) Samuels. Born 1873 in Vilna, Lithuania. Died Jun 28, 1926 in New York (Manhattan). Buried Jun 29, 1926 in Montefiore Cemetery, New York. Religion Jewish.

1920 census lists her as Rebecca "Garfunkel," 47, born in "Vilena, Russia." (Might this have meant "Voliner, Russia," in the Ukraine, like Morris?) She came to the U.S. in 1911 (as did all the Garfinkel children except Irving), lived on Bergen St. in Brooklyn, and was widowed by 1920. 1926 certificate lists her as Rebecca Garfinkel, final residence at 1924 74th St., Brooklyn, New York.



She married Birel (Beryl?) Garfinkel. Religion Jewish.

Birel died before 1920.



They had the following children:

5. Morris Samuels. Born Jul 1, 1885 in Annapol, Russia (Ukraine). Died Dec 2, 1940 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Religion Jewish.

1920 census states Morris had lived in Voliner, Russia. Lived in St. Louis, then Cape Girardeau. May have lived for a while in San Antonio, Texas, in 1921. Owned retail store.

Naturalized Sept. 14, 1923, in Missouri: came to U.S. on the Lexeperia, from Liverpool, arrived in Boston March 10, 1902.



He married Fannie Shaltupsky, daughter of Morris Shaltupsky & Sarah Gutterman. Born 1892 in Grodno, Russia. Died 1973. Religion Jewish.

Fannie came to U.S. 1907.



They had the following children:

6. William Samuels. Born Aug 15, 1894 in Annopol, Russia (Ukraine). Died Jan 9, 1966 in Paragould, Arkansas. Buried in Chevra Kedisha, University City, Mo. Occupation Scrap Metal Yard. Religion Jewish.

William was born Wolf (Zev) Shmykis. Had a twin sister. Attended a private Hebrew school. Family business dealt in wheat, buying from peasants and selling in other parts of the country. It cost about 50 rubles ($25) to pay the border guard to leave Russia in 1912, at age 16 or 17. Stayed in Germany, France, England, and other countries sometimes 4-5 days before passing the next border. (Describes two sisters and one brother as living in the U.S. before he came.) Arrived in Halifax from Liverpool on board the S.S. Corsican on Feb. 10, 1913, came to St. Louis via Montreal and Detroit. In U.S., worked for Kolnee(?) Clothing Co. in St. Louis. Wanted to go back to Russia when he reached age 21, so his mother would not be fined $300 for his failure to report to the army, but he wasn't able to afford passage. About 1920 moved to Cape Girardeau. Worked 22 years in ladies' ready to wear, running one of two stores with his brother. Naturalized Sept. 22, 1925, in the Circuit Court of Cape Girardeau County at Jackson, Missouri. Moved to Paragould, Arkansas in 1938. His citizenship papers say he was born Aug 15, 1894, but his tombstone says Sept. 25, 1895.



He married Fannie Sorkin, daughter of Louis Sorkin & Rachel Mampel, Dec 16, 1916 in U.S. Born Jul 25, 1894 in Moleshkovitch, Russia (Belarus). Died Jun 22, 1984 in Chesterfield (St. Louis), Mo. Buried Jun 24, 1984 in Chevra Kedisha, University City, Mo. Religion Jewish.

Fannie came to U.S. with the remaining children, arriving at Ellis Island on the S.S. Campania on December 23, 1911. She earned $6 per week at home, running a "butcher shop."

Ship manifest lists her as "Feige," age17 (i.e., born 1894), working as a seamstress.

Petition for naturalization granted May 4, 1942, Jonesboro, Arkansas: Lists her name as "Fanny," living at 600 S. Ninth St., Paragould; born in Moleskovitch, Russia on July 25, 1894. She came to New York from Liverpool as Feige Sorkin on the S.S. Campania on Dec. 24, 1911. She was married Dec. 25, 1916, to William, who was born in Anapola, Russia, on Sept. 21, 1894, came to St. Louis on March 10, 1913, and was naturalized in Jackson, Missouri, on Sept. 22, 1925 (cert. no. 1618200).

Her citizenship papers say she was born Jul 25, 1894, but her tombstone says July 26, 1897.

7. ? Samuels. Born Sep 21, 1894 in Anapola, Russia (Ukraine). Died in Russia. Religion Jewish.

William's twin sister. She lived in Russia. Bernard remembers that when he was a child, William got a letter saying that she had died in Russia.



8. Mary Samuels.

Was she a sister, or sister-in-law?

Lived at 5823 Webster St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1957.

9. Leah Samuels. Religion Jewish.

Leah died when David was an infant, sometime in the nineteen-teens. They had over 9 children.



She married Moshe Frumerman. Religion Jewish.

Moshe remarried after Leah died, and had more children with his second wife. He was apparently killed in a pogrom around 1922. Other Frumermans emigrated from Russia to Israel in the 1990's.



They had the following children:
