Welcome to the Katz Home Page

The KATZ family originated in Nadworna, Galicia (now Ukraine) and migrated to Viseul de Sus aka Oybervisheve and other towns in Maramarosh (now Romania) no later than 1850. Their journey may have taken them through Lvov. Families that the Katzes married into include: FOGEL (Poienile de sub Munte aka Polyen-Ruscova), INDIG (Sighet and possibly Birsana), LAX (Sighet), VIZEL / WIESEL (Polyen-Kobletsky), MUELLER (Khust).

First Generation

1. Chaim KATZ was living in Nadworna in 1828. He died between 1857 and 1871. He had a least one son, Yitzchak Zvi, and possibly a son Moshe.

2. Yisroel KATZ is believed to have been Chaim's brother. Yisroel had at least one daughter, Chaya.

3. Chaim is belived to have had at least one other brother, whose name is not known. This brother had at least one son, another Yisroel KATZ (possibly Yisroel Chaim).

Note: There was already a Yisroel KATZ in Oybervisheve in 1837, but it is not known whether this is the same Yisroel as #2 above. There also was a Hersh KATZ living in Oybervisheve in 1837, and his relationship to us, if any, is not known. (Query whether he is the unknown #3 above.) This Yisroel and Hersh both were brandy distillers.

Second Generation

1. Yitzchak Zvi (son of Chaim - Generation 1, #1) was born in Nadworna in 1828 and died in Oybervisheve on February 13, 1888 / 2 Adar 5648. He was a butcher. Yitzchak Zvi married Chaya KATZ (daughter of Yisroel - Generation 1, #2). Chaya was born in 1833 and died in Oybervisheve on April 17, 1913 / 11 Nissan 5673. Yitzchak Zvi and Chaya had nine children who survived to adulthood.

2. Moshe (possibly the son of Chaim - Generation 1, #1) was born in Nadworna in 1842. He died in 1882. Nothing else is known about him.

3. Yisroel or Yisroel Chaim (son of Unknown - Generation 1, #3). He married Chaya Eiga (family name unknown). He was a landowner and had at least three sons.
