My father was born in KRAKOW, my paternal grandfather in BIALYSTOK, my mother in LEEDS, England, her father in VILNIUS now Lithuania, descended from Yoel Likhtmakher b.1751. My wife was born in the BAGHDADI community of CALCUTTA (Kolkota), India. We are interested in tracing all branches and connections of our families.

The FUCHS (FOX) Family

Avrom Fuchs is the first known of the line; his son was my grandfather Rabbi Dr. Jacob Samuel Fuchs (1868-1938) born Bialystok,, editor of Hamaggid and later Principal of Aria College in England, married to Rose TRENNER who descends from Chiel Yitzhak Trenner (born 1797) and Selig PUFELES (born Krakow 1802)who descends from Israel PITZELE of Krakow, born about 1720. My father was Dr I. Solomon FOX, (1896-1971), Mayor of Chester in England and Chairman of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain, married to Gwlady LIGHTMAN.

The LIGHTMAN family.

The Lightman family of Leeds, Yorkshire, England has been traced back to Yoel LIKHTMAKHER (born 1751) of Vilnius. Victor LIGHTMAN J.P. (1860-1930) born Vilnius, was a pioneer of the furniture manufactory in Leeds, England. His wife Rebecca LEVY was born in England and they were my grandparents. His siblings were Louis LIGHTMAN (b 1864) . Rachel MOSES(MOSS), Hilda ROOMS, Annie BERNSTEIN, Yvenda KURASKIS, Bertha GELLERMAN, and Deborah BALLIVEICON (Balevicius)

The JACOB and EKAIREB families.

My dear wife Dr Hannah FOX was born in Calcutta, daughter of Nissim JACOB and Rachel EKAIREB. Both families are large, and have generally followed the migration route Baghdad-Calcutta-London-Los Angeles. Tracing the ancestry of these Sephardi or Mizrahi families presents special problems, but we have some names going back to mid nineteenth century Iraq, with branches in Yemen, Egypt, the Levant and Afghanistan Most of the Calcutta community is now in Los Angeles, but there are still a few in India and others are scattered around the world.
