Introduction by Peter Landé
This database contains the names of 671 Jews who emigrated to Peru from the early 1800's through 1947.
In the 1930s, European, especially German, Jews sought to emigrate wherever they could. Many went to Latin America. While the largest numbers went to Argentina and Brazil, smaller numbers went to virtually every country, including Peru. The attached list was taken from La Inmigración Judía al Perú, published in Lima, Peru in 1987. Most of the Jews listed arrived in the 1930s, with a few after World War II.
La Inmigración Judía al Perú 1848-1948 - A Documentary History of the Immigration of German Jews, by León Trahtemberg Siederer, offers a history of Jews in Peru, including community organization, going back to the early 19th century. Despite its subtitle, information is provided on Jews from anywhere in the world, not just Germany.
The book has a variety of birth, confirmation and death lists in the late 19th century and early 20th century (separate lists) but the primary emphasis is on arrivals during the 1930s and early 1940s, which provide more information on individuals, such as profession.
Since the book is unlikely to be widely available, inquiries regarding named individuals may be sent to Peter Landé at firstname.lastname@example.org.
