CAROUGE:
"This cemetery was built in 1788 and used till the 1970s. Its
720 tombs were renovated in 1997. Victor-Amédée
III, who was crowned King of Savoy and Sardinia in 1774, wished
to turn the borough of Carouge into an economic centre able to
rival the Calvinist city of Geneva and the French town of
Versoix. A new town was thus 'invented' (A. Corboz). To further
its development, the Catholic town of Carouge opened its doors in
a spirit of tolerance to freemasons, Protestants and Jews. The
latter settled here in 1779, hailing from Alsace, England, Italy,
the Netherlands and Hamburg. The first Jewish immigrants were
cloth-merchants, mercers, shop and tradesmen, whereas their
offspring turned to the industrial sector, notably watch-making."

"CEMETERY DESECRATORS SENTENCED IN FRANCE". A Jewish Telegraphic
Agency report by Lee Yanowitch stated that a French court
sentenced on April 24th [1999?] "Four neo-Nazis for the 1990
desecration of thirty-five graves at a Jewish cemetery in the
southern town of Carpentras. The court sentenced Olivier Fimbry,
26, and Patrick Laonegro, 29, who were identified as the
ringleaders, to two years in prison, the maximum penalty under
the law. Two other skinheads, Yannick Garnier and Bertrand
Nouveau, both 27, each received twenty-month sentences for their
roles." Source: Jewish Telegraphic Agency

In a field, located off N83 (west side), just north of the
store but the key held at Fondation ELISA, open Sun.-Fri.,
8am-4pm. Fondation ELISA is a retirement home, approximately one
mile north of the cemetery. This is a walled and gated cemetery,
with both gates chained and locked. Although it is obviously
still in active use, it was in extremely poor condition with an
estimated 700 visible graves. The oldest section is in the
middle, closer to the side gate. The maintenance hut was
unlocked. There was evidence of fairly recent vandalism including
swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans painted on the walls. Some
stones clearly had been overturned deliberately, etc. As to any
upkeep, weeds were cut down, but rains, etc. have created gullies
and have washed the earth away from under stones and slabs,
leaving large, gaping holes there. We were unable to determine on
that visit exactly who was the person in charge of the cemetery.

GRUSSENHEIM (HAUT-RHIN):
Jewish cemetery: On the northern edge of the town off of D.9,
a small sign points to "Steles" (Monuments). The cemetery is in
the middle of a cornfield with at least 500 graves. The centered
is kept locked. The key is in the possession of a Mme
Schweinmachte, Tel. about 89.71.67.12. She pointed out to us a
vacant lot across from her house (Rue de Doubs) that had been the
synagogue that Germans had burned to the ground. On the way out
of town, as we turned the car, we noted a Rue des Juifs. While no
more Jews live there, the name of the street had not been
changed! Amazingly, burials still occur there. While the older
stones are virtually unreadable, the cemetery shows that someone
cares for it, attempting to keep down the overgrowth and to place
broken stones, etc. in their approximate place. Source: Dan and

When my wife and I were in Lauterbourg, Bas Rhin about 10
years ago, we found the tombstone of an ancestor who had served
in the Army of the Rhine from 1792-1800 but noticed the large
Jewish cemetery nearby. I walked through it. Because of the
condition of the cemetery, I presumed, sadly, that none of the
Jewish residents of Lauterbourg returned after the War. This
small city is located at the junction of the Lauter and Rhine
Rivers halfway between the pre-war Siegfried and Maginot lines.
