• Coro is in northwest Venezuela, across the water from Curacao and Aruba. Joseph Curiel (1796-1886) founded a small Jewish cemetery on Calle Zamora. The cemetery contains the tombs of three or four influential families, notably the Fonsecas and the Curiels. The 1832 grave of Joseph Curiel's ten year-old daughter is the oldest in the cemetery. Another notable grave is that of a woman with a Polish-sounding name who died in the 1940s. Jews came to Coro from Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) in the early 19th century. The cemetery was established about 1832. No Jews live in Coro today, although a Curiel descendant is Governor of the State of Falcon. Access to the cemetery is difficult. Try to get keys from Lucas Guillermo Castillo at the Museo de Coro down the road. If they seem reluctant, ask for a policeman to accompany you and wait while you look around.
