US MILITARY BURIALS
Grave Locator for Government Cemeteries in U.S.
Search for burial locations of veterans and their dependents in U.S. Veterans Administration national cemeteries, state veterans cemeteries and various other Department of Interior and military cemeteries at http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1. A successful search provides the following information about the deceased: date of birth; date of death; date of interment; burial location; address and phone number of cemetery; and, in the case of military personnel or relative, rank and branch of service. Burial Location Assistance from Department of Veterans Affairs
The National Cemetery System (NCS), Department of Veterans Affairs, provides limited burial location assistance to the next-of-kin, relative or close friends of decedents thought to be interred in a Department of Veterans Affairs national Cemetery.
NCS personnel can research records to determine if a decedent is interred in one of the VA national cemeteries. All requests must relate to a specific individual since research cannot be conducted on groups on the basis of surname, military unit, war period or place of residence.
Arlington National Cemetery is under the Jurisdiction of Department of the
Army. Department of Veterans Affairs has ACCESS to information for citizen
requests. Burials at sea are under the jurisdiction of Department of the
Navy. Here, too, Department of Veterans Affairs has ACCESS to the
information. Various societies, with nationwide locations, can assist with burial
information. For example, Disabled American Veterans (http://www.dav.org)
will provide assistance.
To request a burial search on a specific individual, it is requested that the following information be provided:
a. Full name (First, middle, and last)
b. Date and place of birth
c. Date and place of death
d. State from which veteran entered military service
e. Rank and military unit in which veteran served on active duty
No form is required and no fee charged for this service. Simply provide the above information in a letter addressed to:

WORLD WAR II: FRANCE - Normandy American Cemetery {10140}
CIVIL WAR RECORDS:
The names of all Jews, who fought in the Civil War, are contained in The American Jew As Patriot, Soldier and Citizen by Simon Wolf, published around 1895. A former Union general, who stated that no Jews fought in the Civil War, may have provoked this book. The names are organized by state and provide the regiment in which the individual served for both North and South. From that, a regimental history can be obtained, which may contain references to relatives. Many such histories exist. At minimum, you should be able to find a state history, which will contain references to each regiment. Source: inack@pipeline.com (Irwin Nack)

THE CEMETERIES
Arlington National Cemetery:
In the 1990s, Kenn Poch, the self-appointed historian of the Jews buried at
Arlington, was collecting and researching data, with the intention of writing
a book based on his research. Ken passed away in December, 2003. Fittingly, Ken
is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Section 5-JJ, Row 2, Site 4.At the
time of his death, Ken had documented 2,554 Jewish burials at Arlington. His
research includes photos of the grave markers, millitary documents, letters from
family members, and photos donated by family and friends.
[UPDATE] In May, 2008, the family of Ken Poch donated his research and
photographs to the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW). A
website is under development as of August, 2008. Until the site is opened,
comments and inquiries are being received by JGSGW at

opened during the Civil War (1860's) and closed to burials in the 1970's/ The
Records of Interment from this cemetery are maintained at the Baltimore National
Cemetery. These computerized records only include name, rank, organization or
vessel, date of death, and plot location. This information was "supposedly" taken
from the "application for burial". The headstone descriptions are not available
in the data. The applications for burial for all before 1996 [?] have been
destroyed and were not microfilmed according to Ms. Jones). Unfortunately, these
destroyed applications for burial had information such as religion, next of kin,
date of birth, etc. The only way identify Jewish graves in this cemetery is walk
the cemetery and locate Star of David or other indications on the stones.

The USNA Cemetery has burials dating back to the early 1800's. There is no Jewish
section per se; however, there have been three recent Jewish interments: Admiral
Morris Smellow and his wife Minnie during late 1990s and Midshipman 4th Class
Joanna F. Simer, who was buried there on August 21, 1996 (DOD was Aug 18, 1996).
There are undoubtedly other Jewish burials, but according to the USNA Security
Department (410- 267-2498), their records show only Catholic or Protestant as
religion.

Richard Shatzer, Maryland Veterans Commission, Rm. 110, 31 Hopkins Plaza,
Baltimore, MD 21201. The Maryland Veterans Commission runs this cemetery, one
of about seven such state-run veterans cemeteries in Maryland such as the one in
Owings Mills. These are not be confused with the Federal National Veterans
Cemeteries located in Annapolis, Baltimore (Frederick Ave) and others. The
Crownsville Veterans Cemetery was established about 1990 and has a separate
Jewish section surrounded by shrubbery. Mr. Tittle indicated that there are about
20 Jewish burials in the main part of the cemetery. A Star of David on the
headstone distinguishes these graves. According to Mr. Tittle, most of the
Jewish families requested that their loved ones be buried with their comrades
in the main part of the cemetery. He also suggested that Mr. Shatzer, program
director for all Maryland veteran cemeteries, may have information.
