However, recently a second cemetery has opened, so the cemetery may now be called the `United Jewish Cemetery'. The `Jewish Community Cemetery' is listed in the 1993 Ottawa Jewish Telephone book. DUNDAS/CORNWALL/LONG SAULT:

Congregation Beth El Cemetery: Source: Alan Greenberg; ALAN@VM1.mcgill.ca {10550}. Congregation Beth El of Cornwall, Ontario, had an earlier cemetery. However, in 1960, they dedicated a new cemetery in Long Sault, Ontario. Remains were placed into bags, removed from the old cemetery with a rabbi in attendance, and re-interred in the new Long Sault cemetery location. The re-interred graves are at the rear of the new Long Sault Cemetery. At the time of the 1960dedication, Julius Miller was President, Archie Dover was Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, and Moe Schulman was Treasurer of The Congregation Beth El of Cornwall, Ontario. The cemetery is located approximately twelve kilometers west of Cornwall on Route 2 on the south side of the road, just 1.5 miles west of the Route 2 and 35 intersection in Long Sault, Ontario, Canada. The Congregation Beth El cemetery is a separate cemetery adjacent to the Union Cemetery. Both cemeteries are fenced and have a recently black painted iron fence along the road. Several feet before the center entrance gate. two engraved marble dedication columns stand on either side. The estimated dimensions of the cemetery are 46 feet wide by 153 feet deep with more land available going back to the St. Lawrence Seaway. There are neither paths nor roads within the cemetery, although the defined center is wide enough for a vehicle. The graves on the eastern side and western sides face towards this center. The first area with the graves starts approximately 59 feet inside of the front gate. A vast open area occurs until graves resume in the rear section. KRUGERDORF:

Kirkland Lake Hebrew Cemetery: Location: located in Krugerdorf, some 20 miles south of Kirkland Lake and 380 miles north of Toronto. Tiny Jewish populations in nearby Englehart (18 miles away) and Cobalt also used this cemetery founded in 1908. The town's peak Jewish population was about 125 Jewish families in the early 1930s: "a synagogue, a Hebrew school, a chevrah kadishah and, at one time, a kosher butcher and a Jewish men's softball team. The synagogue was sold in 1971; its Ark is now in the chapel of Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Toronto." The cemetery, no longer marked with a highway sign, is difficult to find. OAKVILLE:

Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery: Hwy. 5/Dundas St between Neyagawa and 3rd Line Roads. Beth-El Section is located in Halton Region, Ontario Province, at 43'27° 79'45°, the current town population is 160,000. The suburban Reform cemetery location on flat land is part of a municipal cemetery. A sign in English marks the cemetery. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all with no wall, fence or gate. Tombstones in the cemetery date from 1965. 65 marble, granite, or iron gravestones are in cemetery· The flat and shaped stones, finely smoothed and inscribed stones, horizontally set stones, and flat, low in-ground plaques have inscriptions in English and Hebrew. The municipality owns the property. Properties adjacent to the cemetery are agricultural and other cemeteries. Private visitors visit the never vandalized site. Sections:

The Chevra Kadisha Chesed Shel Emes occupies the southern part of the cemetery. The JGSC has records of the burials in the Chevra Kadisha Chesed Shel Emes section. All burial records are on file at the Dawes Road Cemeteries. A fire destroyed records to the Welfare section of the Dawes Road Cemeteries when the Jewish Congress managed the records, leaving about 100 of over 1,000 graves unidentifiable. While the Jones Ave. Cemetery has been around for over 100 years, the cemetery is classified as active. Mr. Ben Hamburer, General Manager, The Dawes Rd. Lambton Mills Cemetery: Address: 1293 Royal York Road, Etobicoke, Ontario. Phone: 731-2056 Location: Concession C, City of Etobicoke. Direction: South of Eglinton Ave. West. Established: 1909 and active. According to Joseph Hart's book, The Jew in Canada published in 1926, Beth Jacob Synagogue (the Henry Street Shul) used a cemetery "in North Yonge Street" but found the land too swampy. Accordingly, in 1924, the synagogue purchased land in Lambton on what is now called Royal York Road. Sections:

Pape Avenue Cemetery (Holy Blossom or Jews Cemetery): Direction: East side of Pape Ave., South of Gerrard St. East. Established: 1849 and inactive. Closed 1930; The JGSC has records of the burials in this cemetery. Administrating Organization: Holy Blossom Temple, Address: 1950 Bathurst St., Toronto, Ontario M5P 3K9, Phone: 789-3291. In September 1849, Judah G. Joseph, an optician and jeweler from Exeter, England and Abraham Nordheimer, a piano maker from Bavaria, purchased a patch of land 60 feet wide and 400 feet deep on the outskirts of Leslieville, just east of Toronto. This now is the city's east end, near the intersection of Pape and Gerard Avenues. The Pape Avenue Cemetery, held by the Hebrew Congregation and now by the Holy Blossom Temple, was purchased for the sum of 20 pounds through the provincial Chief Justice John Beverly Robinson. The burial of Joseph's son Samuel in 1850 is believed to be the first Jewish burial in Toronto. He is thought to be buried near the entrance although no marker remains. The grave of Catherine, the wife of Alfred Braham, also buried in 1850, was recorded as the earliest Jewish grave in Toronto marked by a tombstone. The stone, unfortunately, is no longer visible. In fact, visitors will find no gravestone predating 1863 and few from before 1880. Most tombstones standing near the street have toppled and are now lying beneath the sod. It is here, presumably, that the earliest burials took place. The Holy Blossom Cemetery on Brimley Road was consecrated in 1930. After that few interments took place at the Pape Avenue Cemetery, although it remained in use through the late 1940's. Because this was the only Jewish cemetery in the area, it was commonly referred to as the Jews Cemetery. Later, when the Holy Blossom took over the administration of the cemetery it became known as the Holy Blossom Cemetery.

Petah Tikva Anshe Castilla (Pardes Shalom) / Toronto Hebrew Memorial Park: Address: Dufferin Street, Vaughan, Ontario. Phone: 635-2883. Location: West part of Lot 27, Concession 2. Direction: East side of Dufferin St., North of Teston Rd. Established: 1975 and active. In 1968, the United Jewish Welfare Fund, expecting that existing Jewish cemeteries would be nearly full by 1980, started looking for land for a new cemetery. The 36-hectares of land for Pardes Shalom Cemetery were purchased in 1980. Eight years later, after establishing a sufficiently large perpertual maintenance fund, the zoning and licensing requirements were met and the first burial took place. Pardes Shalom was the first cemetery in the greater Toronto region to reserve sections for people who are not members of any synagogue or organization. The cemetery also provides free burial for 25-30 indigents each year. Sections:

Roselawn Avenue Cemetery: Address: Roselawn Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. Direction: 2 blocks east of Bathurst St. Established: late 1800s and active. Administrating Organization: Roselawn-Lambton Cmetery Association. Address: 333 Wilson Ave., Toronto, ON. Phone: 398-0563. In 1906, a Jew was killed in an accident at the outskirts of the city and buried in a non-Jewish cemetery. Horrified that the Jewish community was not organized enough to deal with such occurrences, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Weber, member of Goel Tzedec, bought land on what is now Roselawn Avenue for a cemetery. The land was donated to the Chesed Shel Emes (Hebrew Free Burial Society), which Weber organized himself. Through the efforts of Rabbi Gordon, head of the Goel Tzedc and the Chevra Tehillim congregations, the victim was moved to the new Jewish cemetery. The Cemetery Committee of the JGSC is currently transcribing and computerizing data from the Roselawn Cemetery. [2000]
