The Liquidations Bureau, 123 William Street, New York, NY 10038, For general information call (212)341-6400. The bureau "effected the final dissolution and distribution of assets for 28 burial societies and other fraternal benefit organizations."

Organizations such as burial societies are listed in the 1907-08 edition of the American Jewish Yearbook , which contains hundreds of landsmanshaften and other groups. In 1938, the Yiddish Writers Group of the WPA (Works Progress Organization) conducted a survey of landsmanshaften and family circles. The books detailing the results of the survey and the organizations that responded are available in the Jewish Division of the New York Public Library. CALVERTON: (Suffolk County) Long Island

United Synagogue Cemetery : 4003 Middle Country Road (Route 25), Calverton. Located on the south side of the road, about .6 miles west of Edwards Avenue, a brick wall with the cemetery's name "United Synagogue Cemetery" can be seen. Beth David map , Nassau County, Long Island, with directions (127k)

     Beth David has very narrow avenues (most one-way), barely wide enough to turn into. The graves seem squashed together every two or three feet (short graves!) in places. There are many old graves, sometimes next to newer ones. It's a much older cemetery than Wellwood. The gates close at 5pm. There don't seem to be paths between the graves in a lot of areas. The directions (on the map), or maybe the street signs, were not the easiest to use. On the way back to Kennedy Airport from Wellwood, we could not even find the street Beth David was on, and we had been there a few hours earlier! I have a plot map of the cemetery. Source: Arielle K.      If you do not know what society your family is buried in you are in big trouble. The office gave me the Row Number, Section, Block letter, and Grave Number in advance and the street name. There are NO row numbers, NO Block letters, only section numbers on the street signs. (I went on a holiday when no one was in the office.) If you have no map or exact burial location, you will need assistance. The cemetery also is quite messy, with much overgrowth. Workers gloves were left all over the place. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrels were left by the graves. Garbage was all over the place; garbage bags full of stuff was just left on the side of the roads and tucked into the grating of a mausoleum. I can go on but I think you get the picture. Founded in 1928 by William W. Cohen with Clarence Cone, President. Mt. Ararat is a fairly large cemetery. The map they give out as the plan of the sections has numbered blocks from 1-98, though when I counted the sections on the map, they totaled 84. Mt. Ararat is "next door" so to speak to New Montefiore, and a little down the road. Wellwood is an area of cemeteries, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Source: judith27@aol.com

     Wellwood is very nicely kept, with wide "streets" and neat plantings. I noticed one Hasidic section with little metal boxes for candles. The headstones were entirely in Hebrew. There are lots of slate paths in the different sections of the cemetery so that you do not have to walk over graves very much to get from one row to another. [For visitors: A building just past the administration building has restrooms.] Wellwood was easily accessible from the highway. I have a plot map of the cemetery. Source: Arielle K. Located at 40°56'8" N x 73°7'21" W in County of Suffolk, New York at East Setauket, Mud Rd. Directions: Take I-495 (LIE); exit Nicolls Rd. Go north toward Stony Brook (9.3 mi); Turn R on 25A. New Montefiore is almost next door to Wellwood, between Wellwood and the Southern State Parkway. New Montefiore Cemetery has an interesting wall/fence around, a stretch of masonry, then a short bit of vertical bars, then more masonry, offering a glimpse into the place as you drive past. New Montefiore Cemetery, Suffolk County, Long Island (109k)

Directions: For New Montefiore Cemetery "at Exit 35, Southern State Parkway, Wellwood Avenue, Pinelawn, L.I., New York". A printed note says, "on busy days Exit 36 North is often quicker." New Montefiore Cemetery seems to be bordered by Wellwood Avenue to the west, the Southern State Parkway to the south, "Straight Path Road" to the east, and Edison Avenue to the north.
