The JMM maintains a database of burials at Baltimore Jewish cemeteries,
including partial listings from the three large cemetery complexes where most of
Baltimore's Jewish cemeteries are located: Rosedale, Herring Run-Bowley's Lane,
and Hebrew Mt. Carmel (German Hill Road). The JMM also has records of the
now-defunct Jack Lewis Funeral Home from, roughly, 1924-1939 and 1955-1965, and
an obituary index from the Baltimore Jewish Times from 1940-1955. The only
Jewish funeral home in Baltimore today is Sol Levinson & Bros., founded in the
1890s. Levinson's has records dating back to the 1920s and will do look-ups.
Their phone number is 410-653-8900. Source: Deb Weiner, Family History

Cemetery and Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.
- Annapolis National Cemetery: Location: Corner of West
Street and Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD. Contact: Ms. Jones at
Baltimore National Cemetery, 5501 Frederick Avenue. Baltimore, MD
21228. Telephone: 410-644-9696. The cemetery opened during the
Civil War (1860's) and closed to burials in the 1970's. The
Records of Interment from this cemetery are maintained at the
Baltimore National Cemetery. These computerized records only
include name, rank, organization or vessel, date of death, and
plot location. This information was "supposedly" taken from the
"application for burial". The headstone descriptions are not
available in the data. The applications for burial for all before
1996 [?] have been destroyed and were not microfilmed according
to Ms. Jones). Unfortunately, these destroyed applications for
burial had information such as religion, next of kin, date of
birth, etc. The only way identify Jewish graves in this cemetery
is walk the cemetery and locate Star of David or other
indications on the stones.
- Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery (Jewish Sections):
Location: 1911 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401. Contact: Jack
Maynard. Telephone: 410-267-7540. Temple Beth Shalom (1461
Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Arnold, MD 21012) established the
Reform Jewish Section about 1990. (Tel 410-974-0900, Rabbi Robert
Klensin). There were only about 20 burials in this section as of
1999. Congregation Kol Ami established the Conservative Jewish
Section in the late 1990s. (1909 Hidden Meadow Lane, Annapolis.
MD 21401. Tel. 410-266-6006. Rabbi David Bockman, tel.
410-266-9139.) There were no burials in the Conservative section
as of 1999. Mr. Maynard indicated he has complete manual records
in his office. He said the Congregations also have records.
Kneseth Israel Congregation Cemetery: {10282}
Location: near the intersection of Route 450 and West Street
extended, near the Annapolis Mall. Contact: David Earle, Chairman
Cemetery Committee, 680 Americana Drive. Annapolis. MD 21401.
Telephone: 410-280-9817. Kneseth Israel (1-125 Spa Road,
Annapolis, MD 21401. tel. 410-263-3924) is an Orthodox
congregation. The earliest burial dates from the 1920s. Eric
Goldstein, a member of the congregation, has done a lot of work
on the history of the Jews of Annapolis and the surrounding area.
He could be a valuable resource for identifying burial locations
of Colonial Jews. The files formerly kept at Mr. Earle's place of
business (Earle's Moving and Storage, Morland Parkway, Annapolis)
included records of all burials at the Kneseth Israel
Congregation Cemetery. The records, destroyed a number of years
ago, have been reconstructed. He agreed to fully cooperate with
IAJGS. "Files for Congregation Kneseth Israel Cemetery are no
longer kept in Mr. Earle's office. Contact the synagogue office
for current information." Source: Dianne Feldman DWFeldman1@aol.com [September

- United States Naval Academy Cemetery: On the grounds
of the USNA (Annapolis. MD) campus, near the old hospital.
Contact: Chaplain (Rabbi) Lieutenant Commander Irving Elson, CHC,
USN; Chaplain Center, US Naval Academy, 101 Cooper Road,
Annapolis, MD 21402-5027; phone: 410- 293-1100, extension 1111;
elson@arctic.nadn.navy.mil. The USNA Cemetery has burials dating
back to the early 1800's. There is no Jewish section per se;
however, there have been three recent Jewish interments: Admiral
Morris Smellow and his wife Minnie during late 1990s and
Midshipman 4th Class Joanna F. Simer, who was buried there on
August 21, 1996 (DOD was Aug 18, 1996). There are undoubtedly
other Jewish burials, but according to the USNA Security
Department (410- 267-2498), their records show only Catholic or
Protestant as religion.

(410) 732-6400. The JMM published a book on synagogues in
Maryland so the same info is available from them. JMM holds
funeral home records from Jack Lewis Funeral Home (the 1920's
through 1940's).
FUNERAL HOMES:
JMM holds funeral home records from
Jack Lewis Funeral Home for certain years (largely the 1920's
through 1940's). They were the main Jewish funeral home in the late
20's, 30's, and 40's.
Levinson
Brothers Funeral Home, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD

to dwindle. Levinson's has card index records and computerized records of
burials and a useful little booklet about Baltimore cemeteries. They cheerfully
do lookups. [January, 2006]

CROWNSVILLE:

Crownsville, MD 21032. Telephone: 410-987-6320. Contact: George
Tittle, Superintendent; also Richard Shatzer, Maryland Veterans
Commission, Rm. 110, 31 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore, MD 21201. The
Maryland Veterans Commission runs this cemetery, one of about
seven such state-run veterans cemeteries in Maryland such as the
one in Owings Mills. These are not be confused with the Federal
National Veterans Cemeteries located in Annapolis, Baltimore
(Frederick Ave) and others. The Crownsville Veterans Cemetery was
established about 1990 and has a separate Jewish section
surrounded by shrubbery. Mr. Tittle indicated that there are
about 20 Jewish burials in the main part of the cemetery. A Star
of David on the headstone distinguishes these graves. According
to Mr. Tittle, most of the Jewish families requested that their
loved ones be buried with their comrades in the main part of the
cemetery. He also suggested that Mr. Shatzer, program director
for all Maryland veteran cemeteries, may have information.

HAGERSTOWN:
1919 Jewish population was 250. The Synagogue in Hagerstown, to
which most of the decedents belonged, was B'nai Abraham, founded
about 1800. Another synagogue, called B'nai Jacob, existed in
Hagerstown, MD in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Another older
Jewish Cemetery may have existed in Hagerstown, but appeared to
have been "paved over." Certainly, Jews resided in (and died in)
Western Maryland well before the 1890s. Their burial site is
unknown.
- Sons of Abraham Cemetery: Virginia Ave., B'nai Abraham
Congregation Cemetery. Founded 1894. Source: John Drayman,
Montrose, CA Draystar@aol.com who also supplied
the names for the OWBR (now the JOWBR - ed note): Near the
town of Williamsport, the cemetery served the Jewish Community in
Hagerstown, MD. Most of the decedents buried here were Jews of
Russian, Lithuanian, Latvian and Polish ancestry. The overall
grounds also include another cemetery at the rear of the
property, which was originally referred to as simply the "Colored
Graveyard at Halfway." The earliest date of death found on the
markers in the Hebrew Cemetery is 1895. However, this appears to
be unusual, since no other markers date back that far. The
majority of the markers show dates of death in a range beginning
in the early 1900s and continuing through the 1930s. Of a number
of unmarked gravestones, some read only "Infant Boy" or "Infant
Girl." Also, this list of names from the Hebrew Cemetery at
Halfway in the possession of Mr. Drayman should not be considered
"the final comprehensive list," since other people, including
members of his own family, were buried there later than the most
recent date of death on this list.
UPDATE: B'nai Jacob Synagogue in Hagerstown existed. Research
by Mr. Drayman indicates that there is proof that there indeed was such a
congregation though it only existed for a year or so. There is still nothing
about this that appears in any published work, but Mr. Drayman has copies of
records and newspapers articles that prove that this congregation did exist.

UPDATE: There is only one extant Jewish cemetery in
Hagerstown--universally called "the Jewish Cemetery." B'nai Abraham Cemetery on
Virginia Avenue "near Williamsport, Maryland" "in Halfway, Maryland" carries a
Hagerstown, Maryland post office address, since Halfway, and possibly also
Williamsport, have no post offices of their own. In other words, Sons of Abraham
(B'nai Abraham) and Halfway Cemeteries are one and the same. I spoke with Mr.
Drayman by email today and to the cemetery director, Noel Brady, by phone, to
verify this information. Source: Richard Bloom,

SALISBURY:
- Beth Israel Cemetery: {10271} South Schumaker Drive.
410) 742-2564.The Cemetery of Congregation Beth Israel was
established in the 1950's on land purchased adjacent to the
Wicomico Memorial Park. The first burial took place in 1959.
Prior to that date members of the congregation and others in the
Jewish community were buried in Jewish cemeteries in Wilmington,
Delaware, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland.
Family ties generally determined the locale of burial. Despite
the relative young age of their cemetery, Congregation Beth
Israel dates back to 1925 when it was founded as the Kahelas
Israel Congregation. The present name, Beth Israel, was adopted
in 1951. Attractive Beth Israel Cemetery is approximately 2 acres
in size and is well maintained. Burial records and information
are available by contacting the synagogue office. (To reach the
cemetery, travel south on Business Highway 13 through town. Make
a left turn onto Main Street and a right onto Snow Hill
Road/Highway 12. Make a left turn onto Schumaker Drive. The
cemetery is on your right past the Wicomico Memorial Park.) Two
brick entrance walls and a bronze sign plaque mark the entrance.
The cemetery is open during daylight hours, Sunday through
Friday. Burials are indexed as of April 1995. Source: Julian H.
