Mortuary, 1625 Gisler Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Cemetery burials
are indexed but have no biographical data, next-of-kin info,

active and used by the Orthodox, Conservative, Reform,
Reconstructionist, Sephardic, and Orthodox-Hassidic communities.
The suburban cemetery location is on flat land and separate, but
near other cemeteries. A sign in English marks the cemetery. The
cemetery is reached by turning directly off a public road. A
continuous masonry wall and a gate that locks surround the
cemetery. The cemetery is divided into sections by temple.
Tombstones in the cemetery are datable from the 20th century.
1,000-5,000 gravestones are in cemetery, in original location,
none toppled or broken. The granite and iron memorial markers are
flat shaped stones and inscribed, double tombstones, sculpted
monuments, and mausoleums. Some of the tombstones have bronze
decorations or lettering or portraits on stones. Inscriptions on
tombstones are English, Hebrew, and/or Russian. The present owner
of the cemetery property is private individual(s) or corporation.
The cemetery property is used for Jewish cemetery purposes only.
The cemetery was never known to have been vandalized. Current
Care: paid perpetual care. Within the limits of the cemetery are

[September 2003] . Lakeside Cemetery is on the western edge of
historic Folsom. Now a section of Lakeside Cemetery, what was
once the Jewish Cemetery is at western edge of Lakeside Cemetery,
across the road from the mausoleum building. Lakeside was
established in 1861, with the earliest burial in 1862. The Hebrew
Benevolent Society Jeshuath Israel originally established the
Jewish cemetery. Note: The only Jewish family plot left intact is
the Jacob Hyman family plot with three graves and a large
monument. Lakeside Cemetery is about 9 acres with the old Jewish
cemetery about one-third acre with 36 existing tombstones and
another estimated dozen burials without headstones. While most
inscriptions on the tombstones can still be read, the Jewish
cemetery has not been particularly maintained. Ornamentation and
the cemetery border have been removed. The Judah Magnes Museum in
Berkeley is another possible source of information on this
cemetery.

GENERAL INFORMATION: SF Bay includes those areas using area
codes 341, 415, 408, 510, 650, 669, 707, and 925. Some
information on the Pioneer Cemeteries outside the area may be
included. Unless otherwise noted, the following information was
submitted by Bob Weiss for San Francisco Bay Area Jewish
Genealogical Society SFBAJGS, 3916 Louis Road, Palo Alto CA
94303-4541. Somewhere around the late 1800s, the city of San
Francisco decided that no further burials would take place in the
city. They assigned all burials to a town called Colma, about ten
miles south of the city. Those buried in the city could remain
there, but all new burials had to take place in Colma. A few
years later, the city fathers decided that everyone had to go;
i.e., remains had to be relocated to Colma. So the Jewish
cemeteries, like all others, began relocations. How many bodies
actually were moved (as opposed to stones, all of which were
moved) is a matter of conjecture. In heavy rains, old cemetery
locations in San Francisco proper wash up human remains,
particularly those areas where the Chinese immigrants were
buried. Records of the moving were inadequate. It is,
occasionally, hard to find a grave. Anyone planning on doing so
is advised to allow several days for research at the four large
Jewish cemeteries in Colma. Among cemetery listings is California
Jewish History Trip Log by Dr. Norton, B. Stern. (June 18, Aug
17, Nov. 23, and Dec. 26, 1966 and July 19, 1967) Box No. 2802.

SHASTA:
- Old Shasta: West of Redding California, the cemetery
dates back to Gold Rush and immigrant times and is in very bad
repair. Part of Highway 299W was built right over it. The Shasta
County Historical Society was informed of this a couple years
ago; however, since this area has few Jews, care or reclamation
is not a priority. Source: Don Robinson, Just west of the town,
perhaps half a mile or so west of town, is a highway historical
marker that describes the "grave of the Jewish baby". The marker
says that Highway SR 299 was built right over the Jewish cemetery
many decades ago. Some protest was lodged so one grave was saved.
This was the grave of a Jewish infant who died some distance away
during a winter blizzard. The parents had a very difficult
journey to be sure the baby was buried in a Jewish cemetery. It
seems this touching story inspired the state highway bureaucrats
to save this one grave, but the others were paved over. A path
leads perhaps a hundred feet or so downhill to where the grave is
surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Source: Jim Heaphy; e-mail:

of Red Bluff died December 14, 1864. He was buried near land established by the
Shasta Hebrew Congregation as a Jewish cemetery in 1857, one of the earliest
such cemeteries in the region. Since there was no Jewish burial ground in
Red Bluff, Chales' parents made the arduous journey to Shasta to lay their baby
to rest. Concern for the fate of the grave led to the rerouting of Highway 299

Dr. Norton B. Stern, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, and Sonora,
CA. July 11, 22, and 24, 1967. Box No. 2802". The first recorded
death was Felix Edgar Dreyfous (born 1826 and died 27.10.1855) a
"native of France, husband of Catharene (sic) Elizabeth
Dreyfous." The last interment was Ruth Ferguson who died aged 65
on March 9, 1959. A copy of the complete index with birth dates
some with countries of origin and biographical data is available
for those interested. The headstones carry some intriguing
messages such as "Louis Cohn, Comp C 11th. Infantry - Spanish
American War" and George Morris "shot at Chinese Camp California"
9.11 1895 aged 23." "Mayer Baer born Stolhofen Germany 14.12.1821
died 19.5.1907" His son Julius cared for the cemetery for forty
years until at the age of 92 when he turned it over to the
Commission for Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and
Landmarks. Julius Baer's daughter still lives in Sonora and has
much data on the Baer family history. Michael Geldwasser was a
fruit dealer in the town and is the grandfather of Senator Barry
Goldwater. No less than nine people named Ferguson were buried in
Sonora. Rather than the story that Ferguson is an 'anglicised '
version of the Yiddish 'fargesn' - forgotten, the truth is more
logical and surely more touching. John Ferguson converted to
Judaism on his marriage to Rosalie Mock (daughter of Abraham and
Rebecca Mock, natives of France), born April 7, 1851. John
Ferguson was the manager of the Columbia Water Company. His wife
and their children are all buried in the Hebrew Cemetery at
Sonora California. Source: Aubrey Jacobus; e-mail: Aubrey@japhet.demon.co.uk
