BREKOV:
A small hidden cemetery exists halfway between the towns of Strazske (4852 2150) and Brekov (4854 2150), when traveling north from Michalovce to Humenne in a small wooded patch immediately to the west of the road in the direction of the chemical plant further west. It is immediately prior to the overpass above the railroad tracks that has (had?) restaurants for motorists on either side. it is heavily overgrown with vegetation and thus protected against vandalism or even curious onlookers. You just have to know it is there to be able to find it. Nearby on the opposite (east ) side of the road is a red brick tower of unknown purpose above 3 stories high. Further to the east is the Laborec river with remnants of an old mill and a newer building that used to be a recreational facility. I would say there are twenty plus gravestones with fairly legible writings and even some "utensil" type artefacts on the ground ( I recall some type of challice there twenty-five years ago when I visited.) I assume no one cares for the unfencedproperty, but probably well-preserved due to being so overgrown. This information is approximately 25 years-old and may not be accurate in all respects.      In 1994, a gypsy from a tavern led us to the cemetery where tombstones have been reused as pathways, thresholds, etc. We uncovered what we could in a short time, but many tombstones were unreachable with the tools available. Names seen included Gellerman. The tomb of the town mohel, Naphtali haLevi Ehrlich, was there in 1994. The cemetery is outside of the town proper, on the right side of the road. One stone is barely visible from the road. You cross a little stream and climb a hill in order to reach a drywall fence, which seems to mark the outer boundary of the cemetry. From its appearance, I would say that the cemetery has been abandoned since 1938-39. Source: Lenni Kramer, 90 Birch lane, Woodmere, NY 11598

     1998 UPDATE: I visited the Jewish cemetery in Dechtice and its beautiful surroundings. The village of Dechtice is 18 km away from Trnava and 50 km away from the capital Bratislava. It is NOT true, that the cemetery is used for waste dump. Many trees and bushes with sharp thorns that make entry impossible. There is much more left of the overgrown cemetery than is mentioned in the description US Commission No. SLCE000227. One side of the site is about 500 m away from an agricultural co-op but they do not dump garbage in the cemetery. I talked with quite a number of people, even the village mayor, about cleaning up the cemetery. See: http://www.napri.sk/stranky/dechtice for more information. The hilltop above the cemetery is a waste dump or abandoned. The whole hill is unused. The agricultural co-op owns the entire hill, but the cemetery is a separate site. 80% of the site is grass and the rest loose bushes. The co-op cuts the grass annually, but not in the vicinity of the cemetery due to its bad terrain, even for tractors. The village would like to clean this site but need for a little financing in US$. I suggest mainly removal of bushes, payment for about 5 men with chain saws to cut out the unneeded trees and scrubs as needed. The village has no money only debts because they brought the gas line into the village paid by public and village money. Source: markosemes@yahoo.com

DOBRA: {10978}
The town of Zemplen Dobra, also know as Dobra nad Ondavou, no longer exists as it is now under a man-made lake. However, the cemetery is still there in good condition. Directions to the Dobra Cemetery: Go N on the low road on the W side of the lake from Mala Domasa. Pass the dark brown Kaffe Bar. Continue on the road around the bend in the road to the right. It seems as though this is the end of the lake but it is actually only a small place on the W where the lake juts out. Continue on this road a short distance. Turn left at the Hotel Dobra that is really just a small lodge. Make the first right onto a gravel road. Continue about 1 km on the gravel road past a gate that looks like a railroad-crossing gate. The cemetery is a short way past, up the road on the right after this gate. Enclosed in a chain link fence with a lock on it, the key is in Kosice. There is a place on the left side toward the back where you can crawl under the fence if you don't mind getting muddy. Wear waterproof hiking boots as the cemetery is under a heavy canopy of trees and probably never completely dries out. There are about 50 graves. Dr. Josif Banik, who lives in the town of Benkovce, cares for the cemetery. Sources: Bobby Furst, bobbyfirst@sprynet.com and Joan Adler, FAMJAD@aol.com .
