THE CEMETERIES

Courtesy of Dr. Saul Issroff saul@swico.demon.co.uk and his website: http://www.jewishgen.org/SAfrica/subcont.htm#ANGOLA [June 2000]: The Republic of Cape Verde consists of ten islands about 300 miles off the coast of West Africa. From the Inquisition until the late 19th century, this predominantly Catholic area received Jews fleeing from religious persecution or searching for greater economic opportunity.

There are four Jewish cemeteries. A project to physically restore these is under way. Details from Carol S. Castiel, 1245 4th Street, SW, Suite E202, Washington D.C. Tel 202 484 8283; Fax 202 554 7794; e-mail: castiel@aol.com. Source: Los Muestros [The Sephardic Voice], March/April 1997, page 47.
