Western Australia is a huge state of just under one million square miles. Late in the 1800s and the early 1900s, gold was discovered in many places and attracted many Jews. However, most underground mining lasted only 20 to 30 years. The towns shrank or disappeared altogether. The cemeteries are the only lasting monument that Jews lived in the towns. The healthy Jewish community in Australia now mainly is found in the big cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. We want to make sure that these remote Jewish graves are not lost as most will never have any more burials. We have been researching Jewish burials in remote areas of Western Australia and have found nine cemeteries that contain either a Jewish Section or individual Jewish graves: Broome, Carnarvon, Coolgardie, Cue, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Northampton, Roebourne and Sandstone. The only Jewish Community in Western Australia is in Perth where there are three Jewish cemeteries: Karrakatta (the main one); Fremantle (still used but rarely); and the old East Perth Cemetery (inactive). Carnarvon Old Cemetery: Postal address of cemetery: c/o Shire of Carnarvon, 6701, W.A., Australia.
No care. The unlandmarked, inactive cemetery is located in the Gascoyne District of Western Australia on flat land. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is with key via a unlocked gate and continuous wire fence. The sign in English reads: Old Carnarvon Cemetery.
The oldest gravestone dates from 5 Aug 1967. The twentieth century British Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone with English and Hebrew inscription is in original location.
Adjacent properties are housing. Visits to the Jewish grave are very rare. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is no problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year. There is only one Jewish burial, a World War 2 veteran. The nearest Jewish community is in Perth 900 kilometres away. The cemetery is one of nine remote cemeteries in the State of Western Australia that has Jewish burials.

Shire of Coolgardie, Western Australia, Australia. at 30°55' S 121°08' E. Date
of earliest known Jewish community in town is 1894 when the unlandmarked, still
active cemetery was established.
The town is an old gold mining town that once had 20,000 people in the late
1890s and early 1900s. When gold was first discovered thousands of people
arrived. The town had 23 hotels, 6 banks, 2 stock exchanges and 3 newspapers. It
now has about 800 people with 1 hotel. As far as I am aware there are now no
Jewish people living in Coolgardie. The nearest Jewish community is in Perth 558
kilometers away. The cemetery is one of nine remote cemeteries in the State of
Western Australia that has Jewish burials.

Coolgardie General Cemetery: Postal address of cemetery: c/o Coolgardie Shire Council, Coolgaride, W.A., Australia. Cemetery records are in a ledger in the Shire office.
Care is provided by shire workers. The cemetery location is in the eastern goldfields of Western Australia on flat land and part of the municipal cemetery. A sign in English reads Coolgardie General Cemetery. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a continuous wire fence and an unlocked gate. The general cemetery is divided by religious sections. The Jewish section has no divisions. ·
The oldest gravestone is dated 3 April
1895. The five nineteenth century gravestones in cemetery are in original
location. Graves without a proper marker have natural stone borders. A communal
metal memorial plate marks all
burials. Some have iron decorations
or lettering, bronze decorations or lettering other than metallic elements,
metal fences around graves. Inscriptions are in Hebrew and English, English for
the memorial plate. The Coolgardie Jewish cemetery contains 24 graves, of which
five have proper gravestones.
The present owner of the cemetery property is the municipality.
Adjacent properties are open space. Visits to the Jewish section are very rare.
The cemetery is known to have been vandalized. Past maintenance: restoring and
marking all graves and clearing bush by Jewish individuals from Perth: Warren
and Brenda Austin and Andrew and Gwen Carver in September 2004. No current care.
No structures. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is a
problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year.

Date of earliest known Jewish community in town is 1894 when the unlandmarked, still active cemetery was established. Care is provided by shire workers. The cemetery location is in the Murchison goldfields of Western Australia on flat land and part of the municipal cemetery. A sign in English reads Cue General Cemetery. The town of Day Dawn also used this site. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a continuous wire fence and an unlocked gate. The general cemetery is divided by religious sections, but the Jewish burials are in two different places.
The oldest gravestone and the Jewish
community date from the late 1890s. The nineteenth century stone gravestone with
an iron railing is in original location. The other is unmarked. Inscription is
in Hebrew and English. The Cue Jewish cemetery contains two graves in total.
According to the records there was another burial in 1904, however, the maps do
not show where. It must be unmarked as we have checked each and every stone in
the whole cemetery. Cue is another an old gold mining town. I doubt that there
are any Jews permanently in the Cue area.
The present owner of the cemetery property is the municipality. Adjacent
properties are open space. Visits to the Jewish section are very rare. The site
has been vandalized. Past maintenance: restoring the one gravestone by Jewish
individuals from Perth: Warren and Brenda Austin in September 2004. No current
care. No structures. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is no
problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year.

Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a stone wall and a row of trees and an unlocked gate. The sign in English reads: Geraldton War Cemetery.
The one gravestone dates from 27 Sep 1943. The one twentieth century stone gravestone with Hebrew and English inscription is in original location.
Adjacent properties are the general cemetery. Visits to the Jewish grave are very rare, but fairly frequent to the war graves. Care by the Office of Australian War Graves is continuous. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is no problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year. Structures are administrative. The World War 2 Cemetery at Utakatta in Geraldton contains one Australian Jewish airman killed in a plane crash at a training base at Geraldton. As with all Australian War Cemeteries, it is kept in absolute beautiful condition. The nearest Jewish community is in Perth 423 kilometres away. This burial is unusual at the very least. Apparently, the boy buried was a
boarder at a Roman Catholic school in Northampton when he died. His family were
living on a sheep station (ranch) many miles away. The school buried him in
their own cemetery. The grave has been set aside from the others and has a
typical Jewish headstone in both Hebrew and English.
The present owner of the cemetery property is the Catholic Church.

No care. The unlandmarked cemetery is located in the Pilbarra of Western Australia on flat land. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is with key via a locked gate and continuous metal picket fence. The sign in English reads: The Roebourne General Cemetery.
The one gravestone dates from 1924. The one twentieth century stone gravestone with English inscription is in original location but broken and toppled.
Adjacent properties are housing. Visits to the Jewish grave are very rare. The site has been vandalized. No current care. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is no problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year. There is only one burial in the Jewish Section. However, the whole cemetery was very much vandalised. Eventually, the Shire of Roebourne erected a high metal picket fence with solid lockable gates. It was too late for the Jewish grave as the headstone has been broken off and has disappeared leaving only the concrete base of the grave.
