Jewish settlement, mainly in Nairobi, dates from around 1900 when the British Government offered Zionists a territory for an autonomous Jewish Settlement. Herzl refused this; shortly afterward, a few Jews settled in the Colony. Later, some Central European refugees settled. Presently, around 165 Jewish families live here as do a number of Israelis.
