A Visit to Yedinitz – An Unforgettable Experience

I am happy that I have the opportunity to briefly describe a small town in Bessarabia, Yedinitz, a town of scholars, students and writers; a center of Chassidism and progressive culture.
This list was written by Rabbi Dov Burstein in 1969. Subsequently we received the sad news of the passing of the author. He died in Tel Aviv on April 8, 1971 at the age of 78.

Yedinitz – an Unforgettable Town

Yedinitz is a town in the northern part of the Khutin district of Bessarabia. It was a town like many others in Bessarabia – Lipkany, Britchany, Zagoritsa and Kalrosh. The difference among them was the public atmosphere, which was particular to each individual town. However, Britchany and Markolasht were considered “colonies” established for Jewish agricultural workers in the 19th
century. Yedinitz was a regular town, which lived by commerce and trades, as well as by hope and trust in heaven.
The author of the article, attorney Michael Landau, was born in Romania in 1895 in the town of Harlau.

A Town Permeated with Judaism and Zionism

I only visited Yedinitz once, at the end of July, 1935 just before I moved to Palestine. If I only had to concentrate on this one visit, it is doubtful that my memoirs would have been appropriate to be included in a book covering memories about this town and its people. However, I had heard about Yedinitz and its young people a long time before that, almost as soon as I joined the movement. I have to admit that prior to that I had never heard of a town called Yedinitz.
