Guide to the Index of Names

The original Działoszyce Yizkor Book did not contain an index. Therefore, this Index of Names is an entirely new section, added by the editors of the English Edition to make it possible for readers to find passages in the book most relevant to their families.

In compiling the index, certain conventions were used to facilitate the identification of persons who may have been known by more than one name. Married women are listed in the index under both their maiden name and their married name, for example: 1) Najman, Ester m. [married name] Gertler, and 2) Gertler, Ester b. [born] Najman. The names of people who have changed their names are also listed under both names: 1) Harif, Yosef b. [born] Ostry, and 2) Ostry, Josef aka [also known as] Yosef Harif.

What appears as a surname in the book may have been in reality a nickname, often indicating the person's profession. When this is known or suspected, the surname in the index has a [?] after it. If the real (legal) name is known because of something mentioned elsewhere in the book, a reference is made to the real name. Thus, if a man is mentioned as Moszek Dayan [rabbinic judge], but it could be determined that his real name was Moszek Koma, he is indexed twice, as follows: 1) Dayan[?], Moszek, see Koma, Moszek; and 2) Koma, Moszek aka [also known as] Moszek Dayan. The page numbers referenced are listed only under his real name.

Additional information helping to identify an individual is shown in square brackets; nicknames and alternate names are in parentheses.

As is the custom in Poland, the feminine surname endings “cka” and “ska” have been used for women (Rolnicka, Wdowińska) rather than the masculine surname endings “cki” and “ski” (Rolnicki, Wdowiński). Thus the women with such surnames are alphabetized before the men.

When searching for given names, it must be kept in mind that the same given name may have different forms. For example, diminutives in Yiddish are often expressed by adding “el” or “le/la” [Herszel, Fajgela], while diminutives in Polish may be expressed by adding “ek/ka” [Moszek, Hanka] or “cia/sia” [Pincia, Basia]. The names Chaskiel/Jecheskiel were often used interchangeably, as were Eliahu/Eljia/Eliasz; Icchak/Icek/Icze/Izak; Jakób/Jankiel/Jankief; Jehoszua/Szyja [Joshua]; Jeszaja/Szaja [Isaiah]; Lajb/Lajbele/Lajbuś; Eliezer/Lejzor/Luzer; or Menachem/Nuchim. The same person may have been called a different name under different circumstances or by different people. In addition, Hebrew names and their Yiddish equivalents were often used interchangeably, such as Dov/Ber, Cwi [Tsvi]/Hersz, Arje/Lajb, or Wolf/Ze'ev.

In Polish, letters with diacritical marks are usually alphabetized after those written without diacritics. However, since most readers will not know whether the name is written with or without diacritics, diacritics have been disregarded in alphabetizing this Index.

This Index of Names does not include the memorial list of “Town Residents Who Perished in the Shoah.”
