18928 Interpretation

5/4/2011 4:28 PM This is a detail from the image AL_birth.jpg showing that his parents lived in Chorinerstr, Berlin, Mitte when he was born. View the post, there are no responses
18929 Interpretation

5/4/2011 4:28 PM This is a detail from the image AL_birth, apparently showing that the district is Berlin Buckow. Is this a misreading, was he born there, or is it the district in which he lived when he got this copy of his birth certificate? View the post, there are no responses
18930 Interpretation

5/4/2011 4:28 PM This is birth certificate of my father. His parents lived in Chorinerstr, [arrowed] which is in Berlin, Mitte. But at the bottom left [arrowed] the area seems to be Berlin Buckow I. Does this imply he was born in Buckow, or was he living in Buckow when he got this copy? Or is it Berlin ....I, which would be Mitte, and what comes between?

Can anyone read the number at the top of the page?

My other 2 pictures enlarge sections of this.

18931 Translation - German

5/4/2011 4:28 PM Seeking a full translation of entire content of postcard. I think the year is 1924. Also, if anyone can provide insight as to why the message was written in German rather than Yiddish or Polish (the language taught at school). The photo on reverse is also posted to ViewMate with the hope that the style of dress or something else will yield clues about this girl and her family. View the post with its 4 responses
18932 Photo Identification

5/4/2011 4:28 PM Hoping that the style of dress or some other detail in photo will yield clues about the girl's family. (Secular, religious, wealthy, poor, etc.) I believe the year is 1924. The shtetl is Hinkowce, formerly in eastern Galicia, then part of Poland (I believe), and now in western Ukraine. Message on reverse (written in German) is also posted as separate ViewMate image for purposes of translation. View the post with its 1 response

5/4/2011 4:28 PM THIS IS THE EULOGY OF SHMUEL DOVID LEVIN, GREAT GRANDFATHER OF MY HUSBAND. A TRANSLATION OF THIS FIRST PARAGRAPH WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED AS I BELIEVE IT CONTAINS HIS DATE OF DEATH. MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE,

18919 Interpretation

5/4/2011 4:27 PM The image is cropped from the petition for naturalization of my paternal grandfather, John Yurow, in the Court of Common Pleas for Passaic, NJ, in 1896. My grandfather landed in the port of Boston, Massachusetts, in September 1890. What I want to know is the town of his birth, which appears in the image to be "D??tava, Russia." (The queries indicate uncertain letters.) My father once told me that his father came from "Kiev Gibernia," which, if true, would be in the Ukraine. Perhaps the Ukraine was part of Russia in those days? View the post with its 2 responses
18920 Photo Identification

5/4/2011 4:27 PM I found this among my late grandmother's photos. I do not know who this soldier is. Does anyone recognise this picture? I have enlarged it and see that the date on the newspaper is the 24th (month in Russian) 1913. Can someone please tell me something about the uniform, the sword and possibly identify the newspaper he is reading?

I would be most grateful.
My grandmother lived in Stolpce which was in Russia until 1921 then in Poland and now in Belarus. It is a small town 79kms SW of Minsk.

Thanks Melissa McCurdie
