Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

11580 Tombstone

8/26/2009 I need any and all information pertaining to CHOPINSKY. Ideally, I would like to contact a descendant.

What I know so far: The man on the left was identified as William (aka Velvil, Wolf) CHABENSKY, my great-grandfather's brother. The name CHABENSKY goes back to my great-great-great generation, and there is absolutely no other record or mention of CHOPINSKY except this photo.

This spelling where there is an 'O' in the name is very rare in the United States.

I have not been able to read any part of this photo except for the name Rose CHOPINSKY.

Halp! ;p

13379 Interpretation

8/23/2009 My Great great Grandfather Philip is the 5th one up from the bottom in this image of the ship manifest from Hamburg on the way to the US. My Grandfather thought his Grandfather (Philip) came from Lvov. But it very well could have been the maternal side. It looks as if it says Benatura or Benatuna but I can't find any town like this. I figure I'll let you experts take a crack at this. View the post with its 1 response
