Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

19370 Translation - Russian

6/26/2011 4:09 PM Names of Benjamin's parents, address, and any other personal information about him or the family.
I see a 1895 in the middle of the page, and I wonder what it refers to. My understanding is that Benjamin was born in 1896.

19366 Translation - Other

6/22/2011 4:43 PM This is the upper portion of a page from a 1781 Hungarian census. I would appreciate it someone could confirm the title of the page and translate the three columns. (There are six columns, but it appears that the same three are repeated on each side of the document.) I am not certain if this is Hungarian or Latin.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

19367 Translation - Hungarian

6/22/2011 4:43 PM This is the left side of a page from a 1795 Hungarian census. Row 5 contains information for a David Szabo. I would appreciate it someone could translate the columns for which there is an entry associated with this person (i.e., the 1, 2, 4, etc. columns) so that I can understand the information recorded for him. I am not certain if this is Hungarian or Latin.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

(I am posting the right side of the page in my next post, which reflects a few additional notations for this person.)

19368 Translation - Hungarian

6/22/2011 4:43 PM The last two lines in this image are a handwritten comment on an 1822 census page for Itzak Szabo of Rozavlya. I have been told the comment is in ("church") Latin.
I would appreciate it if someone could translate this comment from Latin to English.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you can offer.

19369 Translation - Hungarian

6/22/2011 4:43 PM This is the right side of a page from a 1795 Hungarian census. Row 5 contains information for a David Szabo. I would appreciate it someone could translate the columns for which there is an entry associated with this person (for example, the column on the far left contains some text, and the 3rd and 4th columns to the right of the comment column also contain entries). My purpose is to understand the information recorded for him. I am not certain if this is Hungarian or Latin.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

(I have also posted the left side of the page in an companion post.)

19358 Translation - German

6/22/2011 4:42 PM when my grandfather was imprisoned, he was able to write letters to my grandmother, who had already left for Palestine. Some portion of each letter was for my father, Kurt, who was in Switzerland at the time. My grandmother cut out those portions and forwarded them to my father. These fragments are not dated and I do not know the order. There are two others in separate postings. View the post with its 1 response
