Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

9/2/2012 3:44 PM Interested in English translation of the left column on the card. Also, any help reading the return address or the post mark is appreciated. I understand there is more than one place named Raków. I would like to know the date of the mailing, if legible. View the post, there are no responses

24266 Translation - German

9/2/2012 3:42 PM There are two sub-images, each with a word (an occupation)on the left and the right. The two words appear similar in spelling, except that one has an "ht" in it and the other a "k." The word on the right is clearly "schächter": i.e. schochet or kosher butcher. The one on the left seems to read "schäker," but that simply can't be since it means teaser. It has been suggested that it is "schochet" but where is the "k" or the umlaut? Is it "schenker" (innkeeper)- more likely, perhaps, but no umlaut. "Schucker" (shoemaker) seems the most likely since the "u" has a diacritical mark over it, but I don't think it is that common a word. Any input would be appreciated. 24264 Photo Identification

9/2/2012 3:41 PM I am trying to get a best guess at the time and location of this photo. The woman was born in 1860-1862 and lived in Eastern Galicia possibly close to Bessarabia. She arrived in the US (NYC) in 1903-1906. Died 1935-1939. The woman could have been widowed in Galicia shortly before leaving for the US or in the early 1930s depending upon the specific identity of the woman. There are no identifiers on the photo. Was it taken in the old country? Can one speculate on the occasion of the photo by the clothes etc? Any thoughts are welcome. View the post, there are no responses
