Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

2/22/2012 4:15 PM A card for Yakov Volman. There is a Yakov Volman in the Spiwak tree, but he was from Capresti. Nevertheless, this may be a relative, so every detail that can be gleaned from this card will help me. View the post with its 1 response

2/22/2012 4:15 PM It's a long shot, I know, but I'm wondering if this could be Dvore Spivak, sister to Abram Spiwak of Orgeyev. No one knows what her married name was, if she married, and no one in the family knows her fate. A full translation would begin to help me figure out if this might be the Dvore I'm looking for. 21692 Interpretation

2/22/2012 4:14 PM There are three snips here, of a text I can't decipher from the ship manifest for my grandfather's arrival to the U.S.: "Send home (him?) by ? ?" The top line in the first snip belongs to my grandfather, who evidently was at first denied admission to the U.S. (but he actually WAS admitted then, per his Naturalization and other later records).

I searched the entire manifest for other instances of this and found only two (lower part of the first block, and the middle block). However, I noticed that the "A" in "USA" - last block - looks very similar.

Anyone a handwriting expert, or familiar with this notation?

You can see the original manifest at:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=8769&iid=PAT840_49-0697&fn=Abraham&ln=Shechter&st=r&ssrc=&pid=505131
(All of these examples are from that manifest; but I have seen the same notation on at least one other manifest.
