Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

16075 Tombstone

7/21/2010 4:48 PM This is a fragment of a tombstone in the demolished jewish cemetery in Chumalovo now in the Ukraine. Chumalovo[formerly Somanfalva, Comolovo, Yiddish-Tchemolief] was part of Aus/Hungary state of Maramaros. Between the wars, it was Czechoslovakia. Stone is before 1941. Most residents were murdered in the Ukraine {Kamenets Podulsk massacre]. I would like a translation to English if possible. Maybe I will find the name of a family member. 16064 Translation - Yiddish

7/21/2010 4:47 PM Hi,

thank you to those who have helped me until now. Here are my latest documents in Yiddish: two photos (back side). It's my great uncle Adolf Oberberg. I guess he wrote from Moscow or from Kiev to her sister Rywka Finkelstein in France. The result is at http://finkelstein.free.fr/shoah/avis-de-recherche.html#adolf

This 1929 text is more readable than the other. For the text of 1930, i have also negative, which can help you: http://finkelstein.free.fr/tmp/adolphe-oberberg-1930-negatif.jpg

Important: there may be names of his wife or son, or their address, unknown until now.
Best regards.

16069 Translation - Russian

7/21/2010 4:47 PM These are from an embroidered piece that is probably about 2 yards long and about 18" wide (unfortunately I forgot to measure it). One picture and one line of the Russian appears at either end of the piece. It almost seems to be a Tallis. It is plain in the middle. Any translation and information about this piece would be most appreciated. View the post with its 1 response

7/21/2010 4:47 PM This is the headstone of Marion Needle, who died on June 23, 1926. Her name appears to be Miriam, daughter of the honorable Yitzhak Yaakov. I would appreciate it if someone could translate the rest of the Hebrew for me. Thanks. View the post with its 1 response
