Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

21878 Interpretation

2/29/2012 4:06 PM Can anyone please identify the first and last places listed here in this extract from the UK census taken in Leeds in 1891?

It appears to read Slaborda, but I cannot find a similarly sounding placename in late 19th century Poland.

Was there shtetl Sloboda in Russian-Poland?

Regards, Justin

2/29/2012 4:05 PM Thanks to your generous help, I see that the photo was taken in Lomza, not in Warsaw, and I have found it now in Google Images. It is on the wall of the former Great Synagogue in Lomza, Poland.

Thank you,
Howard Rosen

Previous message:
I took this photo in 1998, and have forgotten the exact location of the plaque and who or what is being memorialized. Has anyone else seen it on their visit to Warsaw? What does it say?
