Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

21443 Translation - Polish

1/25/2012 3:59 PM This postcard was sent to my grandmother after she immigrated to the U.S. in about 1905. It was mailed from Germany, but is written in Polish. I would love to know what it says. It is the best image I could get, so I hope it clear enough to translate to English.

Thank you,
Kathy

1/25/2012 3:51 PM Can anyone read this? Yiddish?
It's on the back of a postcard-photo of someone unidentified in my extended family; I'll post the photo too.

21266 Do you recognize?

1/25/2012 3:51 PM This photo is labelled "Mrs. Sorkin". (I can read Russian, so I know the studio in Ekaterinoslav where the picture was taken.) But I don't know of any Sorkins in my family. She was probably a close friend of my father's family (Schecter/Tileshevsky, from Gomel/Cherykaw). She might possibly be the Feige Sorkin who came to America on the same ship as my grandfather, arriving 3 July 1905 in Philadelphia, with children Lipper, Itte, and Seine, to join her husband Morris Sorkin, 766 No. 6th St., Philadelphia. But I can't find anything about these people except this ship record, and a Blitzstein Bank deposit record for Feige Sorkin. If she has descendants, I would like for them to have this photo of her.
