Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

8/29/2010 4:14 PM This image is a cropped portion of a 1900 New York passenger list, the area associated with the person the passenger was traveling to. Can you read or interpret the name of the person to the left of the "39 Henry" address in the center of the image? Is appears to start with "cous" (for cousin). Can you read the rest of the name?

Thanks.

8/29/2010 4:14 PM Here's a family photo of the Freireich's, who would be my paternal great-grandmother's family. The back of the image says: "The Freireichs's of Biecz, Austria / May 3, 1920" While I know that today, the town's location is Poland, I'm curious if the date of 1920 is accurate. All comments and help welcome! View the post with its 2 responses

16416 Translation - Other

8/29/2010 4:13 PM This image is from the bible of A Levi and the Ventura County Museum is going to display the bible in an exhibit in September and needs the page translated. Several of us have tried but some of the "Latin" characters we can't translate...the wording may be Judeo-German or from Alsace-Lorraine. The first few lines in Yiddish have been translated as:

With the help of G-d
Yahrzeit for my father Selig
5th day of Adar ( not certain of this)

we need help with lines above and below Achille Levi signatue
'14 ?????
