Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

12/26/2010 5:48 PM This is one of the documents found in my great grandfather's immigration file. I found the images in the Li-Ra-Ma collection. I believe they are immigration papers
and perhaps a letter of introduction.
I would appreciate any information about what is contained in these documents. Thanks very much.

17549 Interpretation

12/26/2010 5:47 PM Morris Baseman (aka Morishe Beisman) immigrated from Ukraine. His declaration of intention, petition for naturalization and census info say he was from Odessa, yet the manifest in 1904 on the S.S. Campania (arriving NY 12/24/1904) suggests he is from a town that is something like Dobrorviy. What do you think this town (fourth one from the top) looks like to you? I presume it would be a town near Odessa. View the post with its 2 responses

17552 Translation - Russian

12/26/2010 5:47 PM I've uploaded this cropped view of the baptismal record and have attempted to make the 'taped' words more visible. The consensus so far is that the newborn is Anna, the baba (grandmother or old woman) is Anna Sdatko, the mother is Ksenia Stakhira or Stahira, the father is Matei/Matej Stakhira or Stahira, the godfather is Theodor. If you can read anything else, please let me know! Thanks once again. -Debbie (also - do you think that Anna Sdatko WAS the grandmother?) View the post with its 3 responses
