I would like a transliteration of the given name on a gravestone: he-ayin-resh-tzade. The deceased's first name in English was Herbert. Thank you.

8/19/2013 3:34 AM Hello Steven,

In addition to Herz, the pronunciation could have also been Hirsch or Hersh. This was an often used and popular Yiddish name.

Just some additional information...The Hebrew equivalent is Tzi. Often the two names (Hebrew and Yiddish) were combined into a double name of Tzvi Hersh. In this case though, there is only the one Yiddish name....Jo

The Hebrew letters in this name can only be pronounced (in Yiddish) as Herts (the z is often used to transcribe a tzade, and is pronounced like one by German speakers).

Neither Hersh (with a shin), nor Hirsh (with a yod and shin) no matter how popular those names were in Yiddish.
