Our dear father
An upright and humble man
Shalom, son of Yitzchak Ayzaak (same name, written in Hebrew then Yiddish)
Died on the 20th of Av, 5698
May his soul be bound up for life eternal (5-letter acronym)
6/26/2013 12:53 PM Hello Jeffrey,

The name of Samuel Schrager's father was Yitzchak Aizik. It is a double given name composed of the Hebrew name and its Yiddish equivalent.

Combining names in this way was a common practice at that period of time. Another mode of naming was to have either a single Hebrew name, double Hebrew name, or single or double Yiddish names. As we have now in our societies, people have a more legal or formal name, and then they have a more casual or nickname by which they are known in everyday activities.

Just added for your information....Jo
