6/24/2013 11:13 AM Hi Linda,

if I'm right, this letter was written on Monday, July 17, 1939.
Could you perhaps send a better scan?
6/27/2013 9:52 AM It's a letter from Pinsk, 1 of Av 5779 (17 July of 1939). [Use http://www.hebcal.com/converter to convert the other dates]

Written to a sister, it starts with an expression I don't know about writing, and continues to say "but now, how can one write to you XXXX that everyone died in the summer:
Nisi Yente 12 of Elul [the previous year, since Elul precedes Av]
Zerakh 9 of Av [previous year]
Chaya Rachel 26 of Sivan
I am left all alone, and I took over, for your Yossef, the job of saying Kaddish"

I'm not sure I understand the rest correctly.
The writer seems to be Nochem, and mentions the death of a mother as well possibly on the day of writing - but I'm not sure at all.

I think he summarises: "Up to now He sent the in laws, the sister, the brother" .

It is ironic, and so sad, that the the name "Nochem" is based of a verb for giving comfort in a time of sadness.
Nochem is referring to the mourner's Kaddish - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaddish#Mourner.27s_Kaddish
