5/5/2013 5:14 PM Here Lies (two-letter acronym)
Yehoshua Pinchas, son of Mr. Levi the Cohen
Died 22nd Kislev 5745. May his soul be bound up for life eternal (5-letter acronym)
5/6/2013 2:00 AM Hello Erica,

Jan Peerce's Hebrew given name was Yehoshua Pinchas Ben/(son of) Reb Levi, HaKohen who died on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. This is followed by the Hebrew year and the often used phrase "May his soul be bound up in the bonds of everlasting life."

The word "Reb" preceding his father's given name is a title of honor and respect, however, it does NOT imply rabbi. Also, it is indicated that his father was a descendent and member of the priestly tribe of Kohanim who served in the Temple in Jerusalem in historic times.

Some additional information about his father Levi the Kohane. There is NO surname mentioned in Hebrew on the stone. Also, the letters ahead of the father's name (Ayin-Hey) indicate that he predeceased his son.

Hope that this clarifies the previous response. If you need a further explanation of the designation of Kohane/Kohanim, please feel free to e-mail me, or information is available on the Internet under Jewish sources....Jo
5/7/2013 4:55 PM Erica: You have quite an accomplished and famous ancestor. I remember his music very well, on the radio, on recordings, and in the concert hall.
5/7/2013 5:05 PM Thank you everyone for your help and amazing explanations, I really appreciate it!

He was a very famous Opera Singer, his brother-in-law, too....He was a cousin on both sides of my family....he sung at a ton of family functions back in the olden days, unfortunately, I was 6 when he passed away, so I don’t remember him....AND he has a HUGE family...there are a lot of people out there looking for their cousins/relatives of his....it’s interesting, to say the least!

Thanks again!
