Concerns your inquiry about Sabine Strauß, nee Levi
Dear Mrs. Roden,
Enclosed please find the birth certificate of Sabine Strauß, nee Levi, from Angenrod. As is evident from the document, Sabine was born in Angenrod on October 11, 1840. The father was Hirsch Levi, the mother unfortunately is not noted on the certificate. It states further that Sabine was the first child in this marriage, which probably took place in the same year or in 1839. This could mean that the birth of both parents occurred before 1820. Unfortunately, no registrations of births, marriages, deaths took place in the Jewish communities before 1827. By decree such registrations became a requirement in the townships only from 1827 on.
The enclosed birth certificate is the only notation mentioning a Hirsch Levi in Angenrod, although in house No. 69 there is a Herz Levi, but who is not identical with Hirsch. It appears that after the birth of his daughter Hirsch moved away from Angenrod, or perhaps, he was temporarily staying with relatives in Angenrod at the time.
On July 6, 1859, Sabine married Levi (Löb) Strauß from Grebenau, a union resulting in five daughters and two sons. The oldest daughter Sossa (?) (born Nov. 9, 1860) died on March 30, 1863, the youngest daughter Gusta (?) (born July 8, 1874) died on March 23, 1944 in Theresienstadt.
This is all that I can tell you at the moment, I hope that I could be of some help to you.
With best regards,
Helmut Riffer
