What is the Grave Stone Material?

Can this Grave Stone be repaired? If so, how?
Any other Suggestions for preserving her Memory? Plaque?
Is that a Fungus on the Stone?

Sadie is buried alongside her Mother (1906) and a few rows away from her Brother. He died at age 16 in 1914. All 3 stones have suffered the same Fate, split in two, with the broken piece on the Ground. All 3 are buried at Fish Road Cemetery (Hebrew Cemetery) in Fall River, Massachusetts.

I do NOT need a translation of the Hebrew.

Thanks, Anna

4/8/2013 9:17 PM Anna - Hard to tell, but it looks like marble. The stuff growing on it is lichen or algae. The black stuff could be the same or else stains from the elements. It can be cleaned - at least the lichen/algae, and maybe repaired depending on the overall condition of the stones. You would need to have someone look at them to say for sure. Lisa
4/9/2013 8:27 AM The only way to fix the stones is to replace them. It would cost significantly more to try and make a repair. That having been said, you can memorialize them through a Yizkor plaque, either at a local synagogue, or at yours. Otherwise, check with a local stone carver or the cemetery. Modern stones tend to be thicker and less brittle. They are now laser carved, which is less expensive and will be readable for a long time.
