This is my great grandparents Jewish Marriage Authorisation Certificate. I've been told the hebrew writing is ancient hebrew. Please could somebody translate the ancient hebrew names of my great grandfather Lewis Pearce and his brothers. Also curious to know what any of the other hebrew says. Does anyone recognise and have any information about the place Garvery in Russia? and the place name Tarverig? I'm tracing my Jewish ancestry, and would really like to know what my ancestors hebrew surname was and where we came from so I can take my search further. Would anyone know the route they would have taken to England and on what ship? The family story is they fled from persecution in Russia. Any other information about the certificate most welcome. The groom's name: Efrayim Leib, son of Menakhem who is called Mendel.
(meaning the groom's Hebrew name is Efrayim, his Yiddish name Leib; his father's Hebrew name, used in religious ceremonies is Menachem, but generally, the father is known as Mendel - a Yiddish name).

The erased name, is Yaakov son of Menakhem. I don't know why it is there and why it is erased.

The brothers' names are Avraham and Mordekhai.

The bride is a maid (i.e. not previously married) brought to the ceremony from her father's home (a standard expression) and she is named Ester, daughter of Mordekhai.

There is text above both brothers' names which translated means "will be", or "would be", I can't explain its presence.

This is Hebrew script, and it is ancient only in the sense that Hebrew has been in use by the Jewish people for thousands of years, and it still is. It is the language of daily living and reading and writing for millions of citizens of Israel.

The Jewish date stated on the document is Wednesday, the 8th day of the month of Elul. (Today's Jewish date, written on the top of my newspaper's pages is the first day of the month of Adar, the year is 5773)
