This is an autographed photo presented to my grandfather, Louis Zimkin and someone dear to him.

I would appreciate a translation of the hand written note and the signature. I think it's German.

I would also like to know who this man is. He was evidently well known and honored with many medals. I cannot identify the medals or what field of accomplishment they represent.

Thank you all,
Roberta

1/20/2013 4:32 PM To dear friend Mr. Zimkin and his charming wife with best regards and wishes in the new year.
signed? Garbofsky?
1/21/2013 9:11 AM I read "Herm. Jarlosky"
1/25/2013 8:27 AM I think it might be either Jarlovsky or Jarlowky or even Jadlovsky in old-fashioned script. A date and country would help to identify the person in the photo. The crown on his shirt indicates a royal approval - is that a harp below it? The crosses aren't German 'Eiserne Kreutze'.He isn't famous enough to be in my dictionary of biography, so perhaps some smaller European kingdom.
