My great-uncle Aron Gall was the Cantor. He is the figure on the left. When my parents visited in 60s or early 70s the building was not being used as a synagogue. When my brother visited in 1993 it was a synagogue again with a small congregation. Steven I Herberman had question about when collection for rebuilding began. My guess is after my parents visit as it was not a active synagogue at that time. I would be happy to have a translation of the text if anyone knows Romanian.

1/14/2013 6:29 AM I do not speak Romanian, but Google Translate (and a bit of googling) told me that the meaning of the text below the photo was:

"Great Synagogue of Targu Cucului in Iasi. Built in 1374. Rebuilt in 1762 and after the fire of April 6, 1924. Under the leadership of the Committee: [names]"

Targu Cucului was probably a kind of market square nearby. "Targu" means "market" in Romanian. I tried to find this place with Google maps and I found a place named "Targu Cucu", although I am not sure if this is the same place.

All I could find about the synagogue itself was a brief note on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Synagogue_%28Ia%C8%99i%29) and another article on http://www.bh.org.il/database-article.aspx?77389

It seems that the restoration of the synagogue was done in 1970s, but no exact date is given.
