"With the help of God, Monday, parashat Shoftim, August 18, 1939.
Dear children,
You are surely pondering why I haven't written to you in such a long time. Rest assured, we are all in good health, and may God help us to receive good news from you.
Here the situation is calm for the time being but there is talk of war. Danzig is occupied on both sides by the military: on the one side Hitler and on the other side by our naval garrison. God will protect us from the situation getting worse.
If you are planning to send me an "ethrog", please send it 3 weeks earlier because last year, erev Sukkot, it arrived too late.
Please write to me about the situation there.
Here business is tense because there is talk of war and we are told to hamster food. May God help us in the new year.
May God give you in the new year good life, peace, good income, and good health. Amen.
What is happening with the car? Do you have any news from Krumholts? And from your mother-in-law and brothers-in-law? How is dear Roza? Is she in good health? How are my dear grandchildren?
Otherwise I have no other news." (uses symbol to indicate that a second page follows)
