Hello,
This is a page I came across while searching the "Berthold Rosenthal Collection" on the Leo Baeck Institute web page. It appears to be a list of Jews in the town of Münzesheim,which is in Baden and I have underlined my ancestors.
Three pages preceding this page, was a title page that read "Verzeichnis der Juden in der Badischen Markgrahenschast. 1797/98."
I'm hoping someone would be able to tell me what this list is.

This is a "Listing of the Jews in the Province of Baden" as of 1797/8. "Markgrafschaft" is a medieval term denoting the realm of a margrave, i.e., a potentate who ruled over a border territory, the border usually being that of the Holy Roman Empire. "Mark" is "March" in the sense of a border land; "Graf" is "Count" or similar.

And no, old Berthold never sharpened his pen nib. ;)

Your first ancestor is David Alexander, age 50, occ. Warenhdl. (wares trade), wife, 1 son, 2 daughters. If I remember correctly since the column headings are not on the page, the last two columns are the value of his property (300 fl) and how much he paid in taxes (20 fl.)

The other is Moses Seligmann, age 38, occ, Eisenhdl. (iron trade) wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters, and one other female, probably a servant. 1500 fl. and 20 fl.

At the start of the Muenzesheim list, it says Auslaender (foreigners).

The originals of these records are still at the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe as I have gotten them for a town of interst to me. At least for that town, there were no transcription errors by Rosenthal.

I checked the online version, and that last column is indeed Schutzgeld.

I didn't notice earlier the "b. Einheimische" (native) between entries 3 and 4. So, both of the men who interest you were from Muenzesheim, and Auslaender only refers to the first three men.

I would appreciate clarification of the currency used. In the second to last column, does the Fl. in fact referred to florin?

Verzeichnis der Juden in der Badischen Markgrafenschaft.
The headline of the first page would be a help to understand what the columns indicate. List of inhabitants, the column before last maybe their income or property and in the last column their tax.
David Alexander listed as "Auslaender" - foreigner - "u.Fr." (und Frau, and wife) 50 years old - is Warenhaendler (hdl Haendler abbreviated), has 300 fl (fl abbreviation for Gulden, currency used in southern German states until 1876) and pays 20 fl tax. Moses (Mohel?)Seligmann "u.Fr.", also listed as foreigner, 38 years old, is Eisenhaendler, has 1500 fl and pays 20 fl. If I understand the last two columns rigt. I do not understand the columns "1, 3" and "2/2" behind the age.

As already pointed out by the third responder, Alexander and Selgman were locals, not foreigners. See the subtitle "b. Einheimische" between rows 3 and 4.
"Moses" (not "Mohel") is written in old German script. Generally, surnames are written Latin script, everything else in old German script.
