May I please have assistance with the translation of my g-grandfather's grave stone. He was originally from Galicia but died in Vienna. I am unsure whether this is in Yiddish or Hebrew. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you. Julie Jones, Ontario, Canada

2/23/2011 8:23 AM I am reviewing tombstones from the Viewmate archives.
In Hebrew: The top half of the stone praises the man as important, honest, straightforward, charitable etc.
Zev Ari son of Menachem Mendil HaCohen
The following in small letters is hard to read and may be off.
Age 76 died on 28 Shevat 5689 (8 Feb 1929) and buried 29 Shevat. Feb 9 was a Saturday and there should not have been a burial on the Sabbath, although the inscription looks fairly clear.
You can see the relationship between Zev = Wolf and Ari = Leib here:

HaCohen indicates a descendant of the priestly tribe of Cohen, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The title passes from father to son.
