This is part of a book written by my ggh Rabbi Ari Leib Levine (Lewis Levine. Rabbi in London and Liverpool we think born Belarus. I'm told in the preface to his books he gives details of family history. Can you confirm that this is the preface and if so translate it for me please. It comes from Shiv'eem Ponim Latorah printed London 1916

4/24/2008 This is not the preface but approbations of the book written by two rabbis, Rabbi Avrohom Yitschok Hacohen Kook, and Rabbi Meir Tsvi Young. The former became Chiefr Rabbi of Palestine before the State of Israel was established.
4/24/2008 It is not the preface, but the authorization to print the book.
On the right, the agreement of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Zevi HaKohen Kook. He just indicates that Rabbi Aryeh-Leib Levine was the Rav of the new synagogue in London, little alley street.

On the left, the agreement of Rabbi Meir Zevi Jung.

There are no family records; they could in the Haqdamah (preface).

Could you send me a good scan of the 5 or 10 first pages?

We have not this book in our library. In a bibliographic work concerning this book, I read : "Shiv'im Panim laTorah", or "The 70 facets of the Torah". A selection of ancient and modern commentators... with additions and annotations by Rabbi L. Levine... London.

Printing agrements of :
The 2 previous I have quoted.
Rabbi Menachem Dober Dagotzky, Manchester.
Rabbi Moshe Avigdor Chaikin, London.
Rabbi Shmuel Itzchak Hillman, London.
Rabbi Shmuel Yaqov Rabinovitz, Liverpool.
Rabbi Israel Yaqov, son of Rabbi Abraham HaKohen Yaffe, Manchester.
Rabbi Chaim (nicknamed Doctor Hermann), son of Rabbi Mordechai Shmuel Gollanz, London.

All dated of the year 5677.

Friendly yours.

4/24/2008 There aren’t any family details in this page. The page
is an agreement between HaRav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Isaac_Kook]
and Rabbi Meir Tzvi Yong or Young about the qualities of your ggh Rabbi Ari Leib. It is beautify written in biblical Hebrew. I can try to translate it for you but it won’t sound the same. Maybe there is some information about your family in the following page.

This is not the preface to the book, but approbations written by several rabbis: Meir Tzvi Jung and Rav Avraham Yitskhak Hakohen Kook who says that Levin was a Magid Meisharim, preacher, at Little Alie Street Synagogue (where my grandparents were married in 1909).
I contains no family information.
You need the title page or the author's introduction which should follow the approbations, which may extend to several pages. If you would like to scan these several pages and send them to me I will check for genealogical information.

this is an approbation by R k\Kook (when he was in London during WWI) and R Yung. No genealogical info. Look further in the prefatory materials.

4/25/2008 This is not the preface, it's one page out of the acknowledgments. Part is devoted to Rabbi Avraham Itschak Kook and part to Rabbi Meir Tzvi Jung.

4/25/2008 Hi Rachel,

This isn't the preface. These are HASKAMOT or recommendations of the book by well-known Rabbis. On the right is the recommendation of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Hakohen Kook, the Chief Rabbi of Palestine. On the left is the recommendation of Rabbi Me'ir Tzvi Jung, the "Chief Minister of the Federation of Synagogues in England."

Rav Kook happens to mention that Rabbi Levine was the Rabbi at the New Synagogue on Little Alley Street in London. Rabbi Jung refers to Rabbi Levine as "my friend."

All the best,

4/29/2008 I don't believe that this is the preface you are looking for. These are two forwards written by rabbis. One by Rabbi Yitzchak Cook and one by Mayer Tzvi Yung
