This is a review of a book my Great Grand father wrote. The review appeared in the Jewish publication "Im Deutschen Reich". I am also curious if the book can be found anywhere.

Book Review

Heinrich S. Gelbart. "Lekah tov, a manual for practicing slaughterers". Printed by A. Straub, Labes. A useful book, whose value however is very much spoiled by its unfortunate concluding summary, which states: "In the compilation of this work, from which the shokhet [ritual slaughterer] should learn the principles of the present status of the science, all my efforts were directed toward not reconciling these principles with ritual practice. For the two are such different things that today they can not be reconciled in the least. For one will not wish to mix together several thousand years of ancient religious prescription which are considered sacred with the results of a modern science. One of them will have to lose. The official in question would go against either the ritual prescriptions or the principles of meat inspection." This is absolutely false and is contradicted by the principles put forward in the conventions of the Rabbinical Alliance in Germany of 1898, which state word for word:
1) If a slaughtered animal is found by halakha to be "trefe", even though veterinary science proves the meat not to be harmful to health, it absolutely cannot be considered "kosher". And on the other hand what halakha considers "kosher" must be declared not permitted for use as soon as veterinary science designates it as harmful to health.
2) Even if it seems desirable that rabbis and slaughterers possess knowledge of veterinary science, yet this cannot be presented as a genuine requirement, since in existing circumstances training in the latter discipline is hardly to be accomplished. The slaughterer should be instructed to apply the indications of kashruth only after the veterinarian or slaughterhouse official has declared the meat or viscera to be healthy. B
