Calliope’s
Corner
By Florence Elman
With
Apologies to Gilbert (if not Sullivan)
I
am the very model of a Jewish genealogist,
I’ve
information relative, statistical & elegist,
I
know the names of kith & kin, I quote their stats historical,
From
BMD’s, to occupations, hobbies categorical;
I’m
very well acquainted with mishpucheh who lived long ago
I
fathom onomastics, & I’m very seldom wrong you know,
About
third-cousins twice removed, I’m teeming with a lot o’ facts-
With
many kleine meiselach about my tanta’s husband Max.
For
referential knowledge, I use manifests & censuses,
I
labour day & night, without support or amanuenseses.
In
short, I climb the family tree, for Bubbe’s immortality,
Although
I don’t know much before the start of the last century.
(Chorus)
At
annual reunions, every guest’s a source of family lore,
They’re
photographed & questioned ‘till their memories won’t serve them more,
Then
every tale is researched at the archives for veracity,
For
as a genealogist, I’m famed for my tenacity.
And
in the public library, I research ‘till it closes,
For
my goal in life is to confirm my clear descent from Moses,
So
I haunt the JewishGen site probing each & every family tie -
This
quest is so addictive - G-E-N-E-A-L-O-G-Y!!
My
records are meticulous, my albums are immaculate,
You’d
rave if ever you could see my ahnentafel tabulate,
In
short, I climb the family tree, for Bubbe’s immortality,
Although
I don’t know much before the start of the last century.
(Chorus)
