Cherkassy in Kiev Gubernia

A Cherkassy View of 1917

Cherkassy, a vibrant and vital city of the Ukraine, still has a significant Jewish community, in numbers that show why the Ukraine remains the fourth largest home to Jews in the world. Its Jewish community center and services are the hub of Jewish social services across the Cherkassy Oblast. We invite its current residents and recent emigrants to share their memories of their community and we invite those whose grandparents and great-grandparents were the émigrés to tell their stories while they are still remembered.

The history of this city on the Dnieper is old including the history of its Jewish community. As we use this as a gathering place for records and details of its Jewish history, we need you to contribute your family pictures and your information on what you know about your ancestors' lives here. We thank Florence Elman for being the first to share family photos taken here

People interested in organizing or joining research groups, volunteer projects, and Birds of a Feather Groups centered in Cherkassy or its surrounding communities are invited to email us, as are those with pictures and family-preserved and archive-found records at, Ukraine SIG Interactive Database Projects
