Ekaterinoslav
gubernia was founded in 1802. The various gubernias were reorganized into oblasts
in 1924.
"Ekaterinoslav"
means "Catherine's City", named after the Czarina of the time.
After the revolution of 1917, it was renamed Dnepropetrovsk, after the Dneiper
River which runs through it.
