Through the efforts of a number of researchers, some with roots in Sub-Carpathia, a comprehensive list of archive holdings for Sub-Carpathia has been created. This is a work-in-progress. More information will be added as it becomes available.

Ukraine as well as Sub-Carpathia has two types of archives for our genealogy purposes:

Civil Registry Offices are under the administration of the Ministry of Justice. Each city that is the center of an oblast (county) or a raion (region) has a civil registry office that maintains birth, marriage and death records. In Sub-Carpathia, the registry office ­is in Uzhhorod (Ungvár), the capital.

Regional (Raion) - Archives belong to the Archival Administration of Ukraine.

To assist you when reading microfilms or if you have received a copy of the actual vital record, following are two types of page headings—with translations—that will be helpful to interpreting the record for your research efforts.

Through the efforts of JewishGen and many genealogists to acquire and transcribe records, JewishGen's Hungary database—contributed by the JewishGen Hungarian Special Interest Group (H-SIG) and individual donors—has more than 850,000 records from many different sources: vital records, census records, property tax records, etc.

The combined databases have entries referring to individuals that once lived (or still live) in the current and former territory of Hungary (including Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, N. Serbia, NW Romania) and Sub-Carpathia Ukraine (including Bereg, Máramaros, Ugocsa or Ung megyék). The database is always work in progress and new entries are being added regularly.
